Jim just noticed the drawing that Geoff posted of the tender front. Very useful. Have taken a copy hope you don't mind. I have also noticed that it shows a vertical hand rail. I'm sure you already know that it was not on many of the Brit and not 70036 and I am unsure for the clans. I can't check as the wife and I are logging in my fathers house and have been since before he died in november. His books are all to general. . If I get a chance to go home I will check keep up the fantastic work you two. 70006 is sat all sad and un loved on the study floor here not been worked on since the last steam in November Regards Andrew Andrew Sent from my iPhone using ProBoards

Thanks Pete and Andrew for the comments and observations.
I'm sorry to hear of the loss of your Dad Andrew, having lost my Dad a few years back I can well imagine the gap his passing would leave in your lives.
The issue of the tender handrail I think got a mention of Geoff's thread as it rang a bell when you mentioned it. I haven't actually checked the details of Boadicea's tender but I'm sure you are right in saying it didn't have one.
Please feel free to lift, copy or whatever, anything you think might be useful, the great thing about this site is the way information and details are passed around so freely.

Hi Andrew, Following your comments on the handrails shown in Geoff's tender drawings I went and checked my Perrier drawings and as you pointed out no handrails are shown. A quick check through the couple of books I have suggests that the handrails on the tender front were more a feature of the BR1D tenders. By way of interest my two Hornby OO models (Boadicea and Clive of India) both have the handrails on their BR1 tenders. Jim

Hi Jim & Andrew ,the drawings i sent were of Les Warnetts 9F which were vastly superior to J.P.'s. The Clans were all B.R.1's. The Britannia's from 70000 to 70024 & 70030 to70044 were all B.R.1's. 70025 to 70029 were B.R. 1A's. The B.R.1D's, with the front handrail were 70045 to 70054 .Use these drawings and omit the handrails if you have to . It's Merlot to-night.

Thanks for that information Geoff. There's no doubt about the quality of Les Warnett's drawings and apart from all else they are so clear. I think I might join you in a Merlot while I sort out my boiler bushes. Jim

Back on boiler work. The fire box tube plate has now been properly silvered both the outside and inside. To protect the tube ends from the heat while silvering the inner edge of the tube plate I used two off cuts of .5" Pizza oven tiles which worked very well indeed. Now the front has been done it's time to start on the fire hole end but not before some soothing liquid sustenance first, it's hot and thirsty work. ;D Jim

Looks good . Are you using gas or oxy ?

G'day Shawki, In answer to your question I'm using gas where I can but for some of the big heats I'm also using Oxy as a supplement to run the silver with my very handy and practical wife using the gas to keep the work hot. Jim

Yes Geoff I am a lucky lad and she can chop wood too. She's a big strong lass and if she spots this post I'll be in deep trouble and in need of more than a soothing ale, probably an ambulance ;D ;D ;D ;D

Hi Jim ,firstly i got your message. I've beem making the reversing shaft and bushes just for something to do. Now i have noticed that the nut that travels along the shaft is a lot narrower (3/8") than the gap in the lifting link (15/32"). The question is, does the nut tend to twist a little and if so, should i make the nut broader ? Page 9. Thank a lot- Geoff (Carlisle).

G'day Geoff, The nut shouldn't twist Geoff but your problem could be related to another issue with the lifting links as described here in one of my earlier posts when I didn't realise you could keep adding to the thread modeleng.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=britannia&action=display&thread=5496As you can see from the photo of the lifting arm on the 9F at the NRM my offset to accommodate the packing piece doesn't look too out of place. Hi Jim, you gave me quite a turn there thought that the photo was your loco. However where it says add 1/8" to the back of the casting ,i think i will have to add 3/6",things just don't add up.

That's an interesting photo Jim, looking at the expansion link I notice its opened a little at either ends of the slot. Do you know if this is due to wear or is it to make for a smoother operation of the link? I haven't noticed this before on other loco's and certainly don't recall seeing it on drawings.
Regards
Pete

Hi Jim, you gave me quite a turn there thought that the photo was your loco. That Yellow tail does funny things to the eyes Geoff ;D ;D ;D I had to do a lot of tweeking with the reversing gear before it was aligned properly with the rest of the running gear. I then found the bush for the return crank as drawn by Perrier was too long which in turn led too Perrier putting a joggle in the radius realign it. It took a lot of fixing including removing the crank pins before everything was sorted. The photos show the problem . and finally fixed. Jim
