hi roger and pete, many thanks for your kind comments. im afraid photography in sunlight will show up all sorts of blemishes at the moment, so a few rubbing downs and further coats of paint required till im happy! the primer i used (cellulose primer from a tin and davids isopon 182 zinc primer cures and allows rubbing down very quickly, but the gloss coats require along time to harden properly before rubbing down before further top coats. in the meantime im going to have a go at the couplings which should be an interesting diversion, but cant decide yet whether to fit the SR type currently fitted to Stepney since preservation, or the original LBSCR type! both are completely different in design! cheers, julian

Looking great Julian! Very nice indeed! Here's a question for you, would Stepney have had an original LBSC coupling in its A1X guise?? More to the point, would Stepney have been an A1X in the yellow livery?? That should help with the decision Cheers Ben

hi ben, you pose an interesting conundrum, which with regard to the preserved LNER Flying Scotsman 4472 and it's alterations since first constructed but still in LNER livery have been discussed in the various journals ad nauseam! on a number of minor details i would like to think that on the next rebuild the Bluebell would make a few alterations to include LBSCR details, or at least pre-SR details, notwithstanding the A1X boiler! im afraid for the couplings its a bit more basic as the SR coupling requires both a L-H thread plus R-H thread on the coupling. i dont have any L-H thread taps and dies! i suppose i could investigate obtaining some either L-H 5BA or 1/8" x 40 whit or ME taps and dies just for the SR type couplings! if anyone has either which they ill be prepared to loan me i'd happily fit the current SR type couplings as fitted! cheers, julian

In reality, you only need the tap if you can screw cut the male thread. Here's one for just over a tenner delivered... or dare I suggest a Metric one?

hi roger, thanks for the links. metric on on of my locos!! you've got to be joking! im not in any rush re the couplings except the eyes on the end of the 'U' links have to be silver soldered in position with the 'U' through the drawhook. the SR type has different length 'U' links to the LBSCR type so need to make a decision which to fit before i get to that stage! (incidentally the martin evans drawings show the LBSCR type 'U' links the wrong way round re lengths). decisions decisions!! cheers, julian

Looking good Julian,
I always enjoy the colour of metals together, and your paint brings the effect out beautifully.
Is your workshop in your house?
Regards,
James.

Hi Julian,
a very fine paint job, but I wouldn't expect anything less. I have in front of me Martin Evans' book "Model Locomotive Boilers-their design and contruction" which on the front cover shows what I thought is a picture of your locomotive, but no this one shows large pipes coming from the side tanks into the smokebox. Apart from this difference looks similar to yours.
Brian

thank you jim and brian! always lovely to get encouragement which spurs me on! ive got the same book, brian, well thumbed and annotated! the pic is R Fenwick's BOXHILL circa 1965. Stepney hasnt had those condensing pipes fitted since the early 1920's so as mine is 'as preserved' it wont either. ive made a start on the SR type screw link couplings that should please Ben! cheers, julian

Good man Julian! Looking forward to seeing the finished couplings. Just be thankful it doesn't have the couplings with 3 shackles, 2 short ones the buffer beam side and the normal larger one to chuck over the hook! Even more fun Cheers Ben

thanks to the very kind help of Ben and Wilf (uuu), ive made a bit of progress with Stepney's screw link couplings today. ive made quite a few sets of scale GWR couplings over the years, but must admit i'd overlooked the SR type - which is deceptively straightforward but much more difficult to make plus requires both left hand and right hand threads. anyway ive made most of the bits - just a bit more polishing to do and the hinged tommy bar and end caps to make. note the lugs that the hinged part of the tommy bar fits into on the front 'U' link between the eyes. cheers, julian

They're gorgeous! If I didn't know better, I'd say the second picture was of full size.

one last pic! the Stroudley shaped drawbar hooks are very distinctive and of unusual shape and deserve close scrutiny and study when copying same in miniature. because the hole through the drawhooks for the 'U' link is not big enough for the eyes on the end of same, they had to be silver soldered in place after the 'U' was added to the drawhooks. cheers, julian
