Just happened upon this, (a google search on leaf springs brought this thread up,) and I cannot believe my eyes, they are simply stunning. I cant stop looking at them! Such an amazing piece of work. Tim. Hi Tim Many thanks for those kind words, doubly appreciated when written by someone whose work on '4476 Royal Lancer' is nothing less than impeccable. I guess you might be looking at your tender springs shortly - I'll follow progress with great interest. Cheers Jim S

Julian,
Firstly, I am enjoying the build and reading your wealth of useful knowledge. Keep posting/ commenting.
Secondly, a question on brass sheet. You mention bending the bass sheet and it having a grain? Can you elaborate a little on that. Sounds like it will bend ok one way and the other can be obstinate.
Thanks Keith

hi tim, i am very pleased you were as impressed with Jim's terrier springs as i was! hi keith, i was always given to understand that sheet was rolled in one direction so has a grain. i am happy to be proved wrong on this. anyway a bit more (small) progress. ive bashed the edges of the material cut off the outer covers to form the top covers with a 3/8" overlap. i will make the scallops for the tank filler in the outer cover then add a few rivets between the top and outer covers then solder them up with the stuff Jim uses that he described above. cheers, julian

Hi Keith, I'd agree with Julian on the issue of brass sheet having a 'grain' due rolling and as a result I always anneal any brass I wish to bend. To anneal I heat the sheet to the point where you see the brass change colour to appear shiny. Getting it any hotter to red hot risks having one of those unwanted 'melting moments' Jim

more progress on the side tanks. Jim Scott very kindly emailed me this morning with very helpful advice plus a few comments about the gap and overlap between outer (side) cover and top plate. i had some strips of 1/16" brass 3/16" wide for the gap, so decided to add this between the above sandwich by soft soldering the strips to the outer plate first. then holes were drilled for 6 x 1/16" copper rivets etc. this is the trial assembly before soft soldering the top plate... you can see in the above a few scribed lines on the top plate to remove excess for the end plates plus the scribed line for the filler hole. this was chain drilled and filed before the riveting and soft soldering... the above is a trial fit to the loco. the boiler isnt level so ignore the uneven gaps. here is the front elevation showing the overlap and step between outer (side) cover and top plate there are various steps and bits and bobs. the front end plates will fit into a recess with the outer (side) plate but not to the top plate as it covers the top plate as per fullsize hiding the step and gap. hopefully that is the worst bit over and the rest should be pretty straightforward. however the inside (side) plate needs a curve at the top otherwise it intersects with the tank filler hole blocking off part of it. i used Jim Scott's special soft solder which is non lead bearing plus has a bit of silver. it has quite good mechanical strength. although not requiring added flux i dip the stuff in bakers fluid before adding and it really flashes very nicely with the added bakers fluid. cheers, julian

here is today's progress with driving rain all day and rubbish TV, except a very good restored copy of Titfield Thunderbolt on TV this evening when i escaped to the workshop! the L-H tank has been done for the outer plates to match the R-H tank. there is a cardboard template for the front end covers - these have been marked out and will get cut up tomorrow. these curved side tanks are very pesky. lots more work than ordinary side tanks! cheers, julian

No evidence of booze Julian! Well done, I'm afraid it flows very freely in my direction.

hi pete, if i said i didnt have any alcohol on Xmas day i'd be lying! anyway bit more progress today... the front end plates have been trial fitted. a few pics. the top covers need trimming back to clear the boiler cladding and cleading when fitted and the R-H side top cover is at the moment a bit longer than the L-H side. with 'square' box type side tanks you dont get these minor problems - with curved top side tanks things are a bit more problematic. if you look very closely at the above pic you can see how the front L-H end plate fits. ive cut up the brass angle for same to start drilling and riveting up same hopefully tomorrow. finally, Mugsy the cat has found a new home to sleep in namely my 5"g LBSCR wagon... cheers, julian

Which lucky club is lined up for the inaugural run Julian?
Are you inviting bids?
Pete.

hi pete,
it will probably be a few odd choices and none local. probably East Grinstead club first for my great friend Vince Williams, then Newcastle Tyne and Wear club for Jim Scott who has been so incredibly helpful and such an inspiration, the Urmston club so that Don Ashton can have a drive and test out his valve gear that he so very kindly designed for me for this loco, then the IOW club.
however that is jumping the gun somewhat!
cheers, julian

Hi Julian,
looking good. Is the boiler side of the side tanks going to be curved to follow the contour of the boiler or straight down?

hi david, many thanks for those very interesting pics. W8 'Freshwater' on the IOWSR, and i am pretty sure the fireman is Pete Taylor.
hi brian, yes the inside side plate ought to have a curvrd top section both to match the boiler and to clear the tank filler hole. i havent cut these sections yet.
cheers, julian

Would that I could get off my butt and make some real progress with Earlswood - they would look good together even if they represent periods many years apart. Cheers Jim

Hi Julian,
I shall be interested to see the method you choose for the mechanical connection of the curved sides prior to soldering.
In the meantime a bit of nonsense.
