Not much time today but managed to get the driving axle spring retainers made and fitted and rough turned in the 4 jaw the two axlebox castings for the trailing and tender axleboxes. I find this a very quick way (compared to milling) to square up the castings. Attachments:

When machining axle boxes I find it easier to bore the hole for the axle then machine the sides relative to the hole, measuring as I go. Interestingly, my digital verniers gave exactly the same readings as a ball anvil micrometer, which in theory is the better tool for the job. Reg Attachments:

Pete Thanks for pointing me over to your thread, looks like you are doing a great job there. Its also encouraging to know there is at least one other of these being built. I've yet to see a video of one running under steam. With it being two years after the articles were printed you'd expect at least one. Ive' not seen any reference to the one built in ME running at all. Has anybody seen one running? (I'll take the opportunity to point follwers over to my thread www.homemodelenginemachinist.com/index.php?topic=15536)Pete

Cheers Pete,
I must admit I havn't found one either, which is a bit worrying. Yours is the only one that seems anywhere near complete. Unfortunately I will have to redesign the boiler as it does not comply with the Aussie codes.

Just a little more progress for the last two nights work. Finished the trailing axleboxes and fitted the axle. Very fiddely job holding the axleboxes when machining, hence what felt like slow progress (about 5.5 hours for the two boxes) Attachments:

Cheers Pete, Unfortunately I will have to redesign the boiler as it does not comply with the Aussie codes. That's a bit of a concern what particular aspect of the code doesn't it comply to? It's so small it's it not that far off being solid copper. Pete

Hehe Pete, I spent ages on my Axle Boxes. They (all 6 of them) are all split boxes and I was determined to get them right.
Good luck with the rest :-)

Hi DT, First problem is the firebox stay spacing, about 2mm too far apart from memory - maximum stay pitch for 1.6mmplate is 16.5mm. I think that there are also issues on the backhead support as well but havn't gone into this too much as yet.

Pete , when I build English engines , for the boiler I use the general dimensions but use the AMBSC code for staying , bushes and other details , any boiler inspector will accept that , problems solved

All good thanks guys. It was "redesign" that was a concern.

Sorry if I frightened you DT. I should have said rejigged stays etc rather than redesign, so panic not. Your boiler inspector has already checked yours anyway I believe. Relatively short night tonight - rough machining the faces on the eccentric straps. Only two problems - plan shows 1/4" thick and that was thicker than the castings before I cleaned up the faces , Also the bores are already border line to size before any cleanup. I think that the strap width ending up around .6mm under shouldn't be too bad and I can oversize the bore and then use a sleeve to correct to size so I am carrying on rather then try and sort out new castings over the Christmas break.

Regards casting, be worth telling the supplier anyway-he may not know about the problem, which would be bad if he's got a few hundred made up the same!

Rather than appear to be having a go at suppliers regarding castings I've PM'd you

Jim and Shawki, Sorry if I misled you - thats what I meant by redesign. Basically you can only accept that the externals are the same. Back onto the eccentrics - I am now sure I was given the wrong castings. When I put the pump eccentric on the axle for the progress shop the eccentric is almost touching the pump ram, whereas the plans show an arm around 3/4" long. More checking tomorrow Attachments:

A quick photo of the drawing of the Eccentrics and straps to actual size. This shows that the castings are quite large and that the bores are very border line. However, nothing on the exterior that a file can't handle. Spent the late afternoon between Chrissie chores reducing the pump eccentric down to the drawn size (or near enough). All work will now halt until Boxing Day ;D Have a great Christmas one and all. Attachments:
