Well I have a arrived home after a day out at the ME EX and what can I say except in my honest opinion (IMHO) it was a complete waste of money and time. The hype was just that hype, the tanks were in a small area and as about the boating pool my son has bigger swimming pool. Was the space better used No. There seemed to be mutiple stools seeling the same sort of goods. I will not be attending another in London. I will how ever attempt to visit the Harrogate and if that is as bad I will never go to another. I took a friend who also thought it a complete waste of time. If the organisers go by attendance it will probally look good as there was a fare que when we got there at about 12:00 but if this is the premiere show in the southeast trying to encourage more people into ME then I do not think it will work. Enough of my ramblings but would be interested in other peoples opinions. That was my experience in the past Uzzy. I was actually in Slough (of "Come, friendly bombs, and fall on Slough! It isn't fit for humans now" fame) on Friday, and briefly, very briefly considered stopping over for a London show. Instead I hopped back to Yorkshire toute suite, and can wait for Harrogate and its smaller sibling in Pickering. It's a long haul from Kent though, I hope you are not disappointed if you do go John

Hmm yes, very nice indeed. I would even imagine our resident "B1" man Mr Vine would agree.. Regards, John

Yep its one of the best Ive seen, love the little turbo generator on the front running board. The builder has obviously done his home work and corrected the classic Martin Evans errors. i will look out for it tomorrrow.

I raised the very same question with the Tonbridge stewards and apparently the quality of the paintwork will match that of the loco. I may have misunderstood them but I thought they said it would be painted this summer so perhaps this time next year we'll see the finished loco.

OK fair dos, South London to Ally Pally via Lyon, France isn't quite the most direct route but finding a cab in South London?
And they only paid the legal.

I have just brought a first class book on the subject of painting (mentioning no names) maybe we should send him a link.

Uzzy - agree. I went on Saturday. Venue was nice - the setting was impressive. Particularly the round stained glass window. However, the proportion of selling stalls to actual model exhibition was way over the top. The models were difficult to find and I thought I had missed one of the halls!! All of the goods on sale I could get by post from the vendors and save fuel, entrance fee and hassle. Refreshments facilities inadequate. Parking inadequate. Regret, difficult to say anything good about it. Assume that is why people have not. Harrogate was good. I shall make Harrogate my only exhibition event in future. Highlight of the day was the pub I stopped at on the way home. ;D Just my impression. Anxious not to offend. Perhaps I should have gone on Friday - if only to meet T_V ;D Regards, Bo.

Hi All I agree with everything Bo has said above, apart from refreshment facilities. The saving grace for me was the Barman in the 'Palm Suite Bar', or whatever it was called, undercharging me by £10 for a round That saved me the entrance fee anyway! Best Pub was the one on platform 8 at Kings Cross, wasn't doing names by then I'm afraid! The well presented/polished B1 was my model of the show, I think. Now I wonder if the owner will equal Chris Vines' paint finish? Cheers Brian

Hi All Not enough models, isles were to small and why do we still have those stands selling drills that claim to drill through anything. It feels as if the organiser only appears to be intrested in lining his pocket. From some of the traders I spoke to they are starting to feel ripped of in comparison to somewhere like Harrogate. Just my thoughts. BTW did I miss a hall? I coulddnt find the B1.

I too was disapointed by the lack of models on display, and the sheer number of trade stands, I was able to get everything on my shopping list but pobably would have not paid that much more on postage compared to petrol and entrance fee...
The place seamed packed on Sunday, so i am guessing the promotors are rubbing thier hands, but I will not be returning next year...Unless our club put up a stand? (Reading SME)

It was OKish, but I was mildly disappointed. I don't mind the 'good' ME trade stands - Reeves, CES, EKP, Arc, Warco etc. They need us as much as we need them and it would be worrying if they could not make it. I do get bored of the drill anything merchant and the guy selling paper towels that willmop up an oil tanker leak - anyone told him to go to Devon yet?
The real disappointment was the lack of good qualty models to make one go 'ooh' and 'aah'! The much smaller Guildford and Bristol shows are better in that respect. Harrogate is certainly more impressive and also has a much better range of second-hand unidentifiable rusty stuff.
It will be interesting to see if the postponed December ME show will fare any better.
...I did like the bacon sarnies, but then again the Guildford show BBQ man does a better job and his drinks are ice cold.
Not sure if I'll bother again next year, by then it will probably be a tenner to get.

Guys,
A bunch of us were discussing the MEX along the same lines. One thought was that it would have been better to use the wasted space between the Palm Court and main hall for some of the models. Maybe add a load more light. The free space in the main hall would allow more room to navigate the stalls and most importantly chat to folk about stuff.
I bought an all electric helicopter for my old age. It's an amazing little bit of kit and make all those bits of metal seem very over priced.

Still, the consequences of a mistake are somewhat less serious than flyin' a real one

Completly off topic, well nearly! This latest sequence of postings reminds me of my time in the RAF, National Service 1960/62 working on and around Mk 2 Shackletons. Many a time the pilot, after a sortie, would come into the flight office and sign his aircraft over to the ground crew, making a comment such as 'not so much a landing, more a controlled crash', believe me, so often very near the truth. Watching these guys fly these miniature helicopters always draws sharp intakes of breath. Hand and eye co-ordination must be really good, not something I could achive these days, my small aircraft days ended at 1½ laps followed by a crash of a 'Chipmunk' (control line) I had spent many hours building, miniature railways are much safer for me. Regarding the exhibition, nothing to shout about, spent nearly an hour in a traffic jam outside on Friday, found it as others have said, many traders not many models, I agee the catering was not good. I can remember when we were there as a club display they had more than the one hall open, but then that was back in the days of the likes of 'Mary White' one of the organising team of those days that seemed to try really hard to please the model engineers and not her financial team back at the office. I should have said in the previous that I appreciate this exhibition was from a different stable to the other I mentioned in the piece. Stan.
