Hope it was a good seam?
Signal stuff or other.
I steamed Sunday and had a great time. Cool day and lovely aroma and a few cups of tea to boot.
Nothing better.

Julian or others.
I had the following message from a club trialling Welsh Anthracite coal I supplied and would like a comment on what they say.
"We completed our trials on the the Anthracite beans with limited success.
The issue was the beans are to small and without grate modifications we found the additional blower required to maintain the fire caused ash carryover which ended up in the smoke box and after 5 hrs of running the smoke box was 1/2 to 2/3rds full."
I think they are obviously running 7 1/4" passanger hauling engines, not sure the type, but interested on your thoughs about what they say.
It is my thought that after five hours it is likely there will be an accumulation and I usually has 1/4 to 1/3 after some hours in a 5" Hunslet.
Do you chaps have to empty the smokebox in similar fashion to what these chaps indicate throughout a day? Is that normal for anthracite.
Thanks.

I've not found a need to use a blower. I suggest they may need to look at the draughting, a slightly smaller blast nozzle may be all they need.
Are they using spark arrestors that prevent all particles being blown up the chimney? Can't say I've ever had to remove that much ash, but I don't have an arrestor that prevents all particles going up the chimney

hi hayden,
i would agree with your ME club customer that anthracite beans are not suitable for 7.25"g locos.
this would not account for the large volume of smokebox ash reported by them. in this respect i think you need to go back to the beginning of this thread when andy and i discussed batches of anthracite that 'exploded' into small particles. a close analysis/inspection of the smokebox contents is required to find out what it consists of (a simple way to do this is to fill a jam jar up with the smokebox 'ash' with water and shake it up and let it settle. you will then be able to see what proportion of the smokebox contents is unburnt particles of coal).
if they dont like the coal and it is too small then there isnt much you can do about it!
cheers, julian

My 7.25 Bridget runs well on anthracite beans as did the Jessie I had before. I would have thought beans would be OK for most 7.25 standard gauge locos. I am pretty sure the gorgeous GWR King and Royal Scot I see regularly carry beans in their tenders. Narrow gauge locos however will definitely suit a larger size (small nuts) and my Stafford ran well on these. I should add it also ran well on beans - just took more shovelling. Providing the tubes and grate are all clear at the start of the day I would expect no more than a centimetre of crud in the smokebox. Your customer isn't making the most of the fuel it seems to me. Here are some 7.25 locos using anthracite - www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDO7oi4M00MPete.

My Thomas 2 runs on anthracite nuts and as a very efficient spark arrester as required by our club,I use to have 1/2 a smokebox of char after about 4 hrs running heavily loaded I tried different blast pipe nozzles with no success The solution was to fit a stainless steel arch in the firebox now there is very little char at the end of the day and the tubes only need cleaning every 3 steamings.

Found this thread when trying to learn a bit more about the various coals. Well I have 25 Kilos of Ffos-y-fran, best Welsh Dry Steam and looking foward to trying it. It cost about the same as two large icecreams and I can have another ten millions tons if needed. Reports soon. D

I was running(Ken Swan 7 1/4" Wren) at our club for a birthday party. In steam for just short of 3 hours running on anthracite beans. At the end of the running there was very little clinker, but I did not use any fire irons at all after lighting up. In the smoke box there was an inch or so of ash/unburnt coal particles.
