Yes, but what have you been doing in your spare time?
Well done - It's looking very good; it's always exciting when you first put the frames together. Just one or two odd jobs to do before it runs... Good luck with it!

Thanks Nigel! I've been trying to find the information on Stephenson's valve gear for it, but without any luck! Do you know any information on it?

hi dan,
bill edmondson of the taunton club came 21st in the 1990 IMLEC with his 'dougal'. his was the one with the specially designed martin evans' stephensons gear. at the risk of being controversial, the valve gear might not have been that good if he came 21st! it has never been published, and perhaps the IMLEC placing explains why!
it wouldnt be difficult to design a 'modern' stephensons gear for 'dougal' incorporating all of don ashton's principles. if i had all the relevant drawings, and assuming adequate clearance underneath the low boiler, i could probably do it in an hour or two.
cheers, julian

Hi Julian,
No wonder I couldn't find anything if it hasn't been published! I don't think Dougal is a very popular model as I've only ever seen pictures of about 2 or 3 - hey ho, only time will tell!
Regards Dan

hi mutley,
if you PM me your details/email address i would be very pleased to see the drawings and see what i can do.
if this helps dan i will be very pleased. it is a shame to fit slip eccentrics to a 5"g loco, i think! it takes away half the fun of driving!
cheers, julian

Back in the workshop after 2 weeks... Painful! Managed to get all the angles drilled and on, along with drawbar castings sorted and machining the frame stay. Didn't take any photos of the doing, but I have a few of what I have now. Cheers for now, Dan Julian, sorry I haven't got back to you. I'll try and copy the drawings tomorrow

Made a start on the horn castings this afternoon. Milled a skim off the back, then took the rest off the front to finshed width of 7/16". Skimmed them off top and bottom so they are all the same at 1 13/16" as the drawing says - Just got to drill the holes in the top for the springs, tap the hole for the spring retaining rod and the holes for fastening onto the frames Dan

Dan, is it just me or is that image broken? I only see a thin strip of image and a lot of blank space.

Are the images like that from yesterday too, or is it just the one from today? It shows up ok for me, but I'll have a look!

Looks good, I am doing my Dougal in 7 1/4" so made my own patterns and castings I haven't touched mine in a while, due to changes in personal circumstances and probable emigration to NZ.

Nice to know someone else is building a Dougal Chris. Have you done the steamchest/saddle arrangement the same with a casting?

I made the patterns for steam chest/saddle as drawn. Its not the best arrangement and from what pics of the real thing I have seen is not prototypical.

I did think it was a strange setup! A couple of people have mentioned that the loco isn't setup very well design wise - Can anyone vouch for as to how they run who has one or has seen them running? mutley and Cro maybe? Cheers, Dan

Didn't know you could tag people on here, cool! Erm yeah my friends one runs well and I've driven it a couple of times. I know one issue they found with the wheel castings was the centres for the crank pins wasn't centre to the radius on the casting (if that makes sense) and they did notify Reeves but they didn't do anything.
Hope that helps, I have told him to check this thread out so hopefully he will join and speak up!
Adam
