Looks like the end of the road for Brit Progress viewers as Photobucket has demanded a ransom of $399 to continue to allow my pics to be shown on this forum. Needless to say that I won't be paying it! JB

I think quite a few of us are in the same boat here, threads are ruined now with photos missing.

I've just Googled limits on Photobucket. It allows you up to 2Gb of FREE photo storage. The answer is to reduce the size of your photo files in a program like Paintshop Pro or Adobe Photoshop. Both these allow you to resize your photos and save, for storage. Unfortunately you can't do this retrospectively to keep forum photos at reduced size, as the photobucket path would be different from the original.
When I first used Photobucket, I just uploaded photos as taken on the camera - max resolution at 52Mb. It took quite a time to upload so I tried reducing to 4Mb like I use for Ebay. Now they upload quickly, and my Photobucket usage is very much lower.
Photobucket also has a 2500 image limit on albums. When you reach that limit you have to create another album.
Hope that helps.
Bob.

Just had a thought after reading Andy's post. There was this problem of 'Ransomeware' hitting large companies around the world. They didn't get anyware with it. Maybe they are now trying it on in the 'private' sector.
You can always check it out by going into your Photobucket account and trying to upload a couple of dozen photos as a trial run. If you have no problem then just delete them and ignore the email.

I think the fact that images have been blocked in our threads shows that it's real Bob......for me life's far to short to let it get at me.....alas my thread will go no further unless PB change their minds very quickly..ie before i do the next update on FB which will continue as it doesn't use a hosting site...

Just done a bit more Googling. It's not a scam, it means the Photobucket account has reached it's maximum FREE capacity but the $399.99 is a maximum. This is what I found:
Pricing: The cost of a PLUS account varies according to how much storage you need! Please note, all subscriptions are billed annually.
•2 GB - Free •Ad Free (no additional storage or bandwidth) - $2.49 / Month •50 GB - $59.99 / Year •100 GB - $99.99 / Year •500 GB - $399.99 / Year
Whether anyone is prepared to even pay $60 is another matter!!
I don't know if any of you who have been effected, can get into your Photobucket account and delete a couple of photos to get below the limit, then perhaps open another account with new password etc. Don't know if that is possible, but worth a try.
Bob

That would be a shame Pete, as I can't see anything on facebook, and I do enjoy seeing your progress.
There are however a lot of image hosts out there on the 'net, so you can always pick another one with more favourable terms; I know several people who use tinypic.com and seem to like it.
I upload all my images to my own server, which is the simplest for me.

My photo bucket account appears to be functioning as normal. I am getting fed up with their intrusive advertising though so have been considering moving to another host. Out of interest are the people who have the problems running ad blocker software?

I'm staggered if anyone has used 2Gb of free data. Look at how many pictures I've posted, and I've hardly scratched the surface. I have reduced the Loctite resolution from the start though, because I didn't think it needed to be that high. Maybe everyone is being informed of the costs of the varying amounts of data used? On Flickr, you can see the amount of data you've used, I'm sure you can do that on Photobucket too.

Maybe they haven't Roger, the 'error' images say "100% third party hosting usage" rather than "100% storage usage", so it seems that photobucket just wants people to post links to the pic's on their site - probably hoping for advertising revenue - rather than putting images on the forum.
With the number of people affected, I'd guess they just changed their policy today, rather than everyone suddenly hitting the limit at the same time.

They have a 'new terms and conditions' at the top of the web page now which outlines these costs. I'm fairly certain I haven't used up 2GB on the photos I have. It's crazy but I'm not going to go back and swap over all the photos after using a new hosting site, what a joke.

Just rechecked and at this stage it seems my avatar is only corrupted. I'm certainly not paying to go ad free.

Hi Jim.
Your photos seem to have disappeared too, on my computer. I did have a look at Roger's thread as well. His is OK so it must be something to do with the size of the photo files being posted to Photobucket. Perhaps we should investigate Microsoft Cloud to see what their limits are. They seem keen to get new users.
Bob.

If Photobucket thinks this is a smart idea they may get a rude shock. Jim

This is Photobucket protecting their income stream.
If you post a link to your photo from this site then the viewers don't actually visit the photobucket site and as a result don't get exposed to the advertising. Net result is that Photbucket's 'click through' rate drops and their revenue disappears. In effect they are giving you image hosting and getting nothing in return. As the old saying goes 'you don't get owt for nowt'...! To protect themselves they allow you a set amount bandwidth. This bandwidth allows you to show you images on other sites and as long as the number of views is low and the bandwidth is also low, everyones happy. If however you have a popular thread with lots of viewings, every time the photo is loaded the bandwidth goes up until, as people are discovering, the allowed bandwidth gets exceeded. At this point Photobucket stop the external site accessing the image and display their warning image instead.
