Hi Shawki Your engine looks great. As I am not familiar with this engine I have a question. It looks like there are five eccentrics on the main drive axle. Are these for an axle pump or for valve gear operation? Jack

Hi Don The valve gear is Alan straight link similar to the NSW 50 class except the weight shaft is on the top instead at the bottom . I am afraid to disagree with you about finishing the engine this year , it has been 9 months since I started and only may be 20% is done , so the figures do not add up . I am now working on the axle pump , the challenge is how to mount or hold the body casting , if there is a will there is a way . Remember I am not a machinist by trade , learned the skill doing the hobby . Hi Jack Yes 5 eccentrics , 4 for valve gear and the centre one to drive the axle pump . Thanks guys .

Hi Shawki, Thanks for that. Hope everything pans out. In any case, you are enjoying the build and its problems so much perhaps there is no hurry to the track!

I got the boiler tested Today (hydro test ) and passed and has an AMBSC number on it . Now this can sit on the side waiting for the rest of the engine to catch up . I am now working on the engine front bogie . The boiler has regulator and super heater fitted ,the reason is I want the super heater to be tested as well as boiler . Attachments:

G'day Shawki
You are encouraging as ever.
Can you please describe and show a picture of the barrel to throat plate joint?
With thankful regards Ian

Fast Worker.
Slow down Shawki, I can't keep up with you. How long did it take you to build the boiler? Thanks for sharing your photos, I find them motivating. Chris

Hi Ian , the throat plate is double flanged as required by the code , I am sorry it is covered by part of cladding , I did that before fitting the dome , it is loosely sitting there . I will try to take a photo as you asked and put it on . Chris , the boiler took few months to do because I don't have heating ( oxy set ) anymore and I had to use one that belong to a good friend and he lives some 30 K away and also has to make arrangement suitable to both of us . On top of that I had to arrange with boiler inspector for various stages of inspection , and to make the matter worst I had minor leaks which I had fix and retest but at last is finished , this is my 27Th boiler and may be the last . I send an email to Aerogel Australia regarding the insulation that was mentioned in another thread , I manged to buy a sample of one square metre of 5mm thick from them for $55 including post and GST and the parcel arrived Today , I will be using that for this boiler .

Shawki...27th...thats is amazing....
Regarding the aero gel, could you forward the contact details etc to my email. As I would be interested in purchasing a similar amount for a boiler i need to build and also to try some at work for some specific heat/loss areas that it may do well in.
cheers Danny

G'daw Shawki
Thanks. That's exactly what I wanted. Can you make me one? ;D ;D
Seriously, some questions. What thickness plate? What did you use for formers? What order did you tackle the task? Did you flare the barrel at all to meet the flange? Any hints to a maker of boiler number I.?
Regards Ian

Ian , sorry I can't ;D 1- As long as you meet the code requirements , you can use any thickness within the code limits or more . 2-For formers I used custom wood ( fine compressed 5/8 or 3/4 thick ) . 3- No I don't flare the the barrel . 4- stages as I do it , others may do it differently . - form plates and wrappers ,make all bushes .... Inspection - silver solder throat plate to barrel & outside wrapper then the dome bush and clack bushes on the barrel. - inner wrapper to front fire box plate and tubes silver soldered together , then solder the fire box back plate and fire door tube ...... Inspection - fit the two assemblies together , secure with clamps , drill holes for stays and bushes as required by the code . dismantle , deburr holes and clean ,re assemble secure with temporary bolts , spacers and nuts . start fitting and silver soldering stays & bushes in stages ( top / left / right / front ) ,then front tube plate and bushes , inspect and clean between stages .... Inspection . - fit and silver solder back plate and / bushes and stays , last but not least the foundation , clean , pressure test ......Inspection and hydro test . I hope this may help .

Do you use my "friend" Lindsay Brack for inspections - Lol !! Or do you use someone from the AMBSC (Australian Megalomaniacal Bloody Silly Clots)?
Incidentally Shawki, I still have not heard a peep from those morons about the supposed testing of my disaster cullinder. So much for super safety!!

As normal, Dr John, dragging the chain, you comments have nothing to to with this thread...post on topic would be more helpful. This is about shawk, who is one on the most prolific model builders in Australia, sharing his experience

Dan - it was a tongue in cheek joke with Shawki, who is MUCH more experienced to test his boilers than any stuffed shirt from AMBSC the majority of whom probably have never made a boiler in their life. Although, having said that, since Ian Kirby has retired from the chairmanship, Barry Potter has taken over, and he certainly has made more than a few boilers, so maybe he is more interested in the safety aspect. You by any chance associated with the AMBSC?? DJ Clank.. clank.. clank ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

G'day DrJ
YOU'RE BACK!
AMBSC Inspectors MUST have made a successful boiler/boilers to qualify as inspectors. Obviously Shawki, who is a boiler inspector, has made many boilers; but he can't certify his own.
Regards your disaster I suggest it did pass its hydro test but the cleaning up of the stay ends done after the testing produced the leaks shown on your web site. Look how close the stay ends have been filed back to the shell.
That you got your money back from Ernie shows the good faith all around. I suggest the boiler in question has either gone under somebody's bench to hide their embarrasment or been made good with Comsol. The live steam community in Australia is too small for crooks to last long.
Regards Ian
