In Sep / 2009 I decided to build another engine , this time a NSW C32 tender engine in 5" gauge . I purchased all the plans , castings , laser cut frames and all materials for the engine , tender and the boiler . There was 191 of these engine here and they were built by Beyer Peacock , Clyde engineering , NSW railway workshops and Baldwin .They mainly painted black but some were painted in other colours . Mine if I ever finish it will be black . I will try to post pictures of progress if I can . Attachments:

What thickness are the frames? - they look very thin on the pictures.
Atthe curent rate of progeress I'm sure it will get finished!

Well Shawki, it's great to see someone posting pictures of their project - looks wonderful, and to teakfreak, I would guess the frames are 3mm or 1/8" which is pretty standard for a 5" gauge loco.

Well it may be a trick of the light, but on my PC screen the axles measure 5/8" diameter and the frame steel 1/16", although it is difficult to be accurate. That axle diameter is about the same as "Simplex" I think, and not unreasonable for a 5" gauge engine so on my monitor the picture seems to be reproducing at about 1:1. Just curious, that's all!

You should 'ave said earlier Shawki - I have a 2/3rds completed tender here that might have saved you a lot of work.

Thank for remarks .The frames are 3mm thick and that is standard for 5" gauge . Not much is done on the tender to post photos yet , I am concentrating on the boiler , I have a few leaks to fix before hydro test .

I also forgot to mention that the axles are 3/4" diameter and not 5/8 as teakfreak suggested , not that it matters but just for information .

I did say that I'd measured them on my screen and I thought it was probably implicit that the reproduction might not necessarily be 1:1; in fact, measuring the gauge the same way comes out at about 4-3/8", and if you scale that up to 5" then the axles would measure 3/4". I think that when I looked at the picture I may have been mistaking the brake rods for the bottom edge of the frame.

While waiting to test the boiler I have been working on other parts such as tender under frame as seen here ( sorry about the quality it is placed on fire bricks ) , reverser stand and brakes . I am still waiting for materials to proceed on the tender . All remarks positive and negative are welcome and useful . We all learn from each other . Attachments:

Today I finished the reverser , the stand is fabricated from mild steel silver soldered with bronze bushes ,the screw is machined from SS ,the hand wheel mild steel , the top plate SS and the nut mild steel with silver steel pins . The photo didn't come out well ,next time I will try harder . Attachments:

I'm sure the workmanship is excellent as usual shawki, but as you say, the photos are not good - you definitely need to try harder in that department. Don't you ever get bored making choo-choos? DJ

DJ , I am retired , any work for the house/car I get it done professionally , my time is spent on family affairs , choo -choos ( workshop and clubs visits ) , computer , and in the evening couple drinks and TV . Can you suggest a better combination ? ( Please don't suggest travel , I have been to many countries and now I am in my opinion in the best place in the world )

As I am still waiting for test and completion of the boiler I have been working on brakes and reverser . I have installed the reverser and reach rod . I have also completed the brakes on the engine , that is steam operated cylinder and manual hand operated control/wheel . Attachments:

Hello Shawki,
That looks a fine machine in 5". If you know my name you will associate it with valve gears, which I have studied for 50 years. I recently analysed the Queensland PB15 and C19 gears for a friend and found an excellent knowledge of design in the Ipswich workshops. You state several batch builders, but who designed the NSW 32? And who translated the valve gear for the model? From the rate of progress, which obviously has not compromised quality, your 32 will hit the track this year with ease and I wish the project well.

You have been visited by one of our home grown valve gear "notorieties. When are you going to return the favour? We can even find a Black (only it's Midland Red) 5 for you to drive. I am sure some larger locos could be found as well.
