G'Day Shawki, I am in the process of building my tender and have a question. Do you build in a removable cover on the top of the tender to allow access to the fittings in the tank? Cheers, Arch

Arch , with my first few engines I build the tenders as per plans ( that is water and coal spaces and the top cover had to be sealed ) , then I found a lot of people including myself using an extra removable tray for coal , this eventually convinced me to change the way I build the coal and water spaces , on later engines including this one , the top of the water tank is horizontal all the way to the front and top cover is screwed in place and does not need to be water tight and is easy to remove for maintenance and of course it holds more water , in my opinion ( I respect others opinions ) once one puts the tray full of coal on the top then all is much of much .In the CORRECT form the top cover has to be made water tight and if removed has to be resealed . It is a choice you have to make .

G'Day Shawki, Thanks for your comments. I had the same thoughts but it is reassuring tohear from experienced folk such as yourself. Cheers, Arch

Hi Mike , the engine will finish mat black , I am using wattyl kill rust mat black all over straight from pressure cans , it is a bit expensive but it is good , one can repair/ touch up paint and it blends in the original paint , no marks .I paint as I go , its not the best practice but it suits me . The wheels are painted all over for rust prevention but the treads will loose their paint on the first lap around the track .Most of these engines were plain black . Some out of 199 engines were painted different colours and livery but I am going for the simple look .

but seeing as I take it in at night and wrap it up, I seem to be keeping rust away That statement threw me for a moment or two Mike - not quite sure what you intake at night - me it's beer!! DJ

All parts for the Alan straight link valve gear are made , as you see I fabricated some parts from gunmetal and SS instead of machining them , all working joints are provided with bronze bushes and silver steal pins with oiling provisions . After this it took me two days to install and remove many times to file here and there to get the movements required . One of the eccentric rods go over the front axle and the other one under the axle for each side , Too much fun installing them . They have been set to basic set up until the cylinders are made and final adjustment and timing is done . Attachments:

I have been quite about this project for a while but I have been slowly working on the tender bogies , a lot of parts to make . I am putting here two photos for the tender under frame and bogies with all suspension and brakes . The brass tube running though the length of the tender is to connect vacuum from engine to carriages if required .Still to fit chains between bogies and frames , I will try to purchase the suitable size or I have to make some . In the coming week I will make the water pipes and connections and fit the tank onto the frame and finish the tender . I will post the final product picture when finished . Attachments:

As always, very nice work Shawki and many thanks too for being so willing to share your knowledge and tips, they are always much appreciated.
Like you I paint as I go. I get a real buzz as the paint seems to bring a final unity to the model.
Thanks again,
Jim

Whew!
I think I'll stick to slip eccentric.
I can see a trip to Sydney just to look that over.

In this arrangement , the eccentric rod & strap assembly for each cylinder one goes above the leading axle and the other under . All inside valve gear arrangements are crowded particularly if an axle pump is squeezed in the centre as well . Like everything else it can be done and is not as hard as it looks .
Ian you are welcome .
