Thats funny you should say that i wondered if i keep going building loco's for the next 30 years (hopefully more) and had a few would i be able to part with any of them TBH i could not part with hte ones i have, mainly due to sentimental reasons and the work/time invested in the same, on the high cost of second hand loco's i have noticed bling does sell though shiny always sells better than dull and big is buteiful. a good dull shabby looking tank loco may run way better than a big shiny non running express loco but it will never fetch as much. most of the runners at our club have fantasic reliability but the loco's look "well bedded in" the tidy shiny ones (like mine) dont get run very often and TBH i dont really want to run mine much anyway as i enjoy making/fiddling more than running.

Ah yes the Drewetts pic reveals Ariel's typically incorrect firebox shape, 15k or more really wants the correct throatplate surely, especially for a glass case model. You'd think an accurate externals would be all the more important for a model that's not to be run.

There's no way I'd part with any of the models we have!

hi doug,
that will keep you busy! you now want to consider a particular loco at a particular shed at a particular period. there is no lack of info on the fullsize locos plus many preserved including the sectioned one in the NRM, and all the Brighton Works drawings survive at the NRM - they have only recently been catalogued.
incidentally the 5"g MN Bulleid Pacific was 'unsold' at the Dreweatts auction.
cheers, julian

(i did say i was going pedantic on the detail )

if you think your 2.5"g loco will be complicated have a look at one of LBSC's famous creations 'Tugboat Annie'! 4 piston valve cylinders driven by a unique Holcroft conjugated gear and Baker valve gear. it was built before Bulleid became CME of the SR. cheers, julian

Pete no i did get a quote from Malcolm but unfortunately he was alot more expensive, and i had already done the drawing so his value added was not really needed, i just went to a laser cutter direct. I would have done the whole thing myself (we have a laser at work) but the cost was only a few quid above the cost of the steel plate so it saved me the hassle. this build is (and this is going to have the old guard up in arms) going to be as much new tech as i can squeze into it CNC mill work 3D printing Laser cutting and laser Ablation if necessary (laser milling) the only machining that i will have to do manually is lathe work, but you never know.

I believe Tugboat Annie was the first loco, miniature or full size, to be fitted with a Holcroft conjugated valve gear. It is a very nice loco. I think LBSC was a much better engineer than some people give him credit for.
