Hi Roger.
I was looking through the Didcot drawings register and came across a drawing that you might find useful: Drg.No.26997 Number Plate Roll - T143 Scanned - No.
Hi Don.
The figures on the BR smokebox door plate should be equispaced, not adjusted for space between, like you would if it was normal typesetting. Here is the BR drawing for anyone interested in making it to scale:
SW-230 by Robert Shephard, on Flickr
Edit: Hi Roger. I forgot to mention....The text behind the colon is the full drawing description for ordering (if you want it).
Hi Bob, I always thought the problem was worse when the numeral "1" was involved, obviously it's much thinner than all the others, especially when preceding a "4", or following a "7" which slope away from it, giving an even bigger gap. We had this problem when repainting locos at Immingham in the good old days. Its a good job there weren't 112 Duke of Gloucesters, as 71111 would have been a nightmare! Cheers Don

Roger you are absolutely correct, the spacing of numerals with all their different widths and shapes, whether they be on cabside brass plates, cast iron smokebox number plates, painted numerals or vinyl stickers on locos or other vehicles all has to be done to suit the eye. It's probably not possible to be scientific about it...."it has to look right". I made the pattern for the cast iron smokebox number plate for 92214 (also used for 92219) and it looked ok until the finished casting was painted, then when standing back, the spacing between the 1 and the 4 didn't look quite right....it's still like that today!

Hi, I went today from the Staffordshire Moorlands area, so car journey wasn't very enjoyable, but really enjoyed the show....haven't been to a Midlands show for many years. Picked up some nice goodies I'd ordered from Adam, plus other stuff ordered from RDG and was obviously impressed with the models on show, but must say I had a real good chat with the builder of the 5" model of the gas turbine loco 18100 and can't wait to see it come to life and actually run! The builder really knew his stuff and it's hats off to him for having a go at something totally out of the ordinary.
Met up with some old friends from the Grimsby area, some of whom I hadn't seen for over 21 years.
Bought some EN24T from Noggin End Metals, to have a go at scale drawhooks for my 9....like the ones on Bob's 92220....which as expected, was truly amazing!
Cheers Don

Success! Bob thanks to you and the other contributors, I can now see the drawings you sent me and now need to get some suitable steel to have a go at a drawhook myself. There'll be no DRO or anything.....it will have to be done the old fashioned way!
Cheers everyone Don

Thanks jools, I have downloaded the e-drawings viewer ok from the first link you posted....had to delete some old stuff, as my laptop's hard drive is just about full. Don't use it much these days as I use an ipad most of the time.

Hi Bob, I have just downloaded and installed a free version of Fusion360 as per Roger's suggestion, so I'm ready to have a go with that single file!

Hi Silverfox, the glass is 1.08mm thick and nominally 60mm square, but dimensions vary a little from 59.75 to 60.1
One of the 4 pieces has a very small "scratch" in one corner, where I tried to grind it a bit!
As you are the first and currently only one in the queue, you are welcome to them if you want....PM me if interested.
Cheers Don

Hi Bob, I don't have CAD I'm afraid....often thought about it but never done anything about it! Is there any free CAD software I could try, that would read your file? If not, I'd be happy with the jpg files.
Thanks very much Don

Hi Bob, I have just started looking at my 9F tender regarding its overhaul and have found that the (Hewson) drawhook tail is a bit bent. In view of the excellent hooks that you have made, is there any drawing info you could show, primarily for the tender hook, but for interest, the engine as well?
When researching such things years ago with regard to the restoration of 92214, which came out of Barry scrapyard with no engine hook or coupling, I remember seeing a very few photos of BR 9s with the same type of coupling on the engine, as the tender. We could not locate a "proper" coupling for the engine and so along with the hook, used one from a Class 37 diesel. No adverse effects were ever witnessed when coupling anything with the diesel type coupling, so it would be interesting to understand just why the 3 link screw coupling was specified for the 9s? Maybe it was to do with overhang and their ability to travel over 4 1/2 chain radius curves, not something I think we ever encountered when I was involved.
Cheers Don

Hi Pete. I've been looking around for 1mm glass too. The Steam Workshop advertises 1mm glass for the Les Warnett 9F in the Hewson catalogue. Not cheap but I haven't found any other source to compare prices. Bob. Hi, I bought a set of that 1mm cabside glass for my own 9F, the openings for which are pretty much to scale, but unfortunately the glass was just about 1mm too short. I had already made and fitted the runners, so didn't use it. It would have been fine if I'd got it before, as the runners could have been fitted to suit....hence its up for grabs if anyone wants it. I can measure it exactly tomorrow if needed....I think it's 60mm tall, not sure about width. Cheers Don

Well maybe not quite as foolish.... I've known bits of bridge come down through the open ventilator of one engine, dislodged by its exhaust. This didn't have any mesh at the time but in those days, any running "under the wires" and the ventilator had to be padlocked shut, plus fire irons chained up in their tunnel. Don't know what the ruling is these days. Cheers Don

Hi, it's likely that the "mesh" you refer to is there for modern day main line running under overhead live wires....stops the fire irons etc. being inadvertently poked up through an open ventilator and contacting the 25kv !

I contacted the Tap & Die Co today, about fine thread taps and dies. they don't make them anymore unfortunately, and I've not located any other suppliers yet. Bob. Hi, Tracy Tools do some 60tpi taps & dies....I've just bought some 5/32 x 60 ones for a particular job with only a very short thread....I did look into metric fine too. Cheers Don

Hi Geoff, I have just looked at various photos I have taken, plus looked in books etc. and my conclusion is that both types were in use on the range of BR1 tenders. Those on Evening Star (BR1G) are definitely of the corner cut off type.....pictures of other tenders show straight cut type! I don't know if the same stiffness of springs were fitted to all BR1 tenders.....the weights of the different types would vary, but not by much. I could check 73129 next Sunday, that has a BR1B type, if that's any help?
Cheers Don

Thanks Bob, I thought I'd have a go at making these, then I can wait in the hope that one day, there will be some nice scale cast ones available.....I'm sure that they would be very popular. I never seem to be able to get really decent photos....haven't got the right lighting for this sort of thing. Cheers Don

Well my missing cylinder drain casting has finally arrived! After waiting over 3 months for it, I can finally complete the work on the underside of the cylinders/frames and hopefully keep things the right way up from now on. I wanted to fit new water gauges to the boiler, looking more scale like than the original "chunky" ones, so I ordered some 3 cock gauges but was dismayed when they arrived....they were just as chunky and not what I was hoping for at all. They will probably be used on a 5" Jinty that's waiting its turn, so what to do with the 9? After being inspired by Roger's excellent water gauge over on his thread, I thought I'd have a go at fabricating some that looked at least a bit more like the real ones. I decided on 5mm glasses and basing the design on others that I had seen, came up with dimensions that were just about the minimum I could use for that size glass. To say the work was fiddly would be an understatement....they definitely include some of the smallest parts I have ever made, but I have enjoyed the work very much and found it most satisfying. A few bits had to be made several times to get things right and on & off, it's taken about 3 weeks to get to this stage. All that remains is to actually fit them to the boiler and adjust the lengths of the linkages for the (dummy) shutoff valves and finish the ends. You may have seen a contribution to Roger's thread concerning injectors. I have bought an ultrasonic cleaning tank and will clean up my dismantled GC scale like BR Standard live steam injector and rebuild it with a new outlet clack valve cap, that got a bit chewed up trying to unscrew it, before applying heat that did the trick. Cheers Don
