But yours was the earlier version, Jim, and I think Norman Spink commissioned the new castings after Mr Gilbert had redrawn the original Perrier drawings. Anyway, you've had the satisfaction of fabricating many parts for yourself. I bet there were not that many castings available when you built your Burrell of which we've all glimpsed many a time before. I've picked up loads of tips from your own build and look forward to the day she's complete and steams for the first time. I will only be four or five years behind you. Steve

Thank you Steve for that information and kind comments. I must admit I've often wondered about the connection between J Perrier's drawings and the the drawings you and Geoff are working to. A few years back I was given a bound collection of the 1976 Model Engineer vol 142 (part 2) which contains a short report on Norman Spink's stocking the "Wilwau" Britannia castings including three photos of Mr James Perrier's superb looking 5"g model of 70013 'Oliver Cromwell'. I find having the background to the drawings and castings adds to the overall story behind the building of a particular model, it all helps flesh things out.
Thanks again,
Jim

The drag box came as two identical castings which are machined all over but, strangely, not bolted together. These could just as easily be made from cast iron or mild steel billets which would be a lot cheaper although a lot of pocket milling would be required. It acts as both a stretcher for the rear of the pony frame and a pivot point for the drawbar to connect the tender. It also contains the cylinder cock bell crank assembly fixed to a machined area on the lower part and with a drilled hole on the upper part. The first thing I did was to clamp each casting to an angle plate, squaring up as previously shown, and milling the four edges to final size. Then they were loaded to a milling vice and the top was flycut and, as can be seen, my flycutter was smaller than the workpiece. It matters not because these surfaces have no function and cannot be seen once built up. Having a cleaned-up surface makes marking out of the holes easier, though, so I felt it worth doing. Also, the inside face of the boss of each casting was flycut to finished height and the area where the bell crank assembly mounts to the lower casting was machined flat. After this, all the holes were marked out and then drilled and tapped as appropriate. The drawpin holes I drilled 15/64" and will drop a 1/4" reamer through them, by hand, after assembly to get them in line. I chose to make this assembly a little different to the drawing. I made the crank arm as per drawing but didn't bother to make the fancy pin and braze it to the crank arm. The picture shows the simplified parts that I made and the pin, which is just a bit of 3/16" unhardened silver steel, just pushes through the side of the casting, through the spacer and the crank arm and into the bearing. It needs nothing to keep it in place because the whole assembly is trapped between the frames. I made sure that the parts were a reasonably accurate fit between the pony frames and also made sure that they were square otherwise they would probably put a twist into the frame when I bolted it all together. I also noted that the tapped holes in the sides of the top half are at different positions to the lower half. It would have been easy to assume they were symmetrical and just mark out both halves the same. Thanks for looking in Steve

Just a short update this time. The two rear pressure brackets help connect the rear beam to the pony frame and also carry the hemispherical pressure pads which sit in the sliding cups on the rear crossbar of the pony truck. I used gunmetal castings but I think I would make these from mild steel bar another time. They didn't need much fettling and it was just a case of milling them square and doing the holes. Although the picture shows all the holes drilled, I didn't mark out those for connecting to the rear beam. After bolting the dragbox to the pony frame and the rear beam to the dragbox I spotted through the rear beam (which will be made next) to the pressure brackets behind. Thanks for looking in. Steve

Oh dear! As Joan knows, my browser settings are such that I no longer see his valuable contributions to the forum. However, when someone quotes an earlier post, all parts of the post are seen. Please, Joan, your message was both unneccessary and somewhat provocative and does little to enhance your otherwise fine reputation. A little thought first, maybe? Please? I do hope this does not start another round of sillinesss. On tenterhooks, Steve

That's all. But he blocked me for no reason whatsoever.

Joan, All I would say to that then is just leave it, he has blocked you and has made it fairly clear on a number of occasions he doesn't want to talk there is no need to bring it up on multiple occasions in various threads for the sake of it - it won't make John change his mind. Steve please crack on with your fantastic updates it is now a build thread I log on to each day to check as I love my Std. locos and am enjoying watching your creation unfold. I have a week off uni next week and can't wait to get back in the workshop on the 9f and all my castings so I will be littering the forum with daily updates and I hope they get as well received as they did at Christmas when I did the 5" brake valve and as well as yours does! All yours Steve, we are all ears! Adam

Adam, thanks for the kind words but i'm just a workshop tinkerer who has a knack for building things. I wish I had the skills that you show in your own thread. If one was allowed to drool, I would have a spitoon nearby when reading your posts. So it's you who should keep up the good work. I, amongst many, are thoroughly fascinated.

Cheers Steve, always nice to hear kind words about your own work. Trying to make the most of the time I have to work on the CAD modeling and then take some time in the workshop to just finish bits off really! Hoping by this time next week to have quite a bit done (although next Friday I will be out on the Black 5 for Easter opening ) Adam

Sorry Adam, but what John, Steve now Midland is doing with me is called BULLYING.
I would never accept such a treatment without an explanation. They are totally wrong about me or my intentions and I never did anything that deserved such a thing. The simple fact of not using English in this forums, already implies some prejudices against me. Maybe they think that I do not have red-coloured skin as most people in Britain. Note that I have never ever used anything but English in this English speaking forums, so using a different language was utterly unnecessary and pointless.
Unless I get an EXPLANATION that I and EVERYBODY can understand, I will not stop posting whatever concerns me given that I will do it using my most polite and educated manners. Sorry, but a forum is to post opinions. Everybody is free to create their own blog if they want full control of it. I have already one in the Catalan language. When if I eventually get all forum members ignoring me then I MAY consider to leave not only this but the forums.
Thanks.

I can't speak for the conflict you have with John personally but I think what Midland is saying, and its what I am saying just in a different way, is let a specific thread be what it is - John asked a question to his friend and the response was for their own information and was not digressing from the topic at hand but you came in and made the effort to change the tone - if we all started doing this on your threads I'm sure it would irritate you, no?
I agree if you want control over what people view then make a blog but here we are able to chat about the topics on hand, if we want a new one, we start it, and that's how forums work. I don't always agree with certain peoples opinions, methods or comments at times but that's one of those things I either ignore it, ask a question or message them.
Not having spoken to John about your issue's (as its none of my business) I am not speaking for him but I am fairly certain you won't be getting unblocked and the necessity to keep pestering in countless places will only alienate the situation further and its a vicious circle.
We have all made friends on this forum, myself included and I have only been here since October last year (I think?) enjoy the people you like talking to, contribute if you feel it is useful or interesting and lastly....enjoy your model engineering as that is what we are here to do!
If you feel I need to justify myself any further then PM me as I don't want to disrupt Steve's thread any further and will delete this post later so progress can continue....on track..... sorry couldn't help myself, where's Hagley when you need a good pun!
Adam

Then just do it. Ignoring someone completely is not just refraining from replying to his/her posts, it also involves not mentioning that person or anything that could relate to that person or his/her posts. So I want to kindly ask you to definitely and completely ignore me. I am already doing that for you except for the fact that I wanted to ask you to do the same. Again, please just do it. Thank you very much.
