Dan, I think I will only be there on the Sunday so won't see you but enjoy the show.
Yes Pullman is lovely, made by a past member and a friend grabbed it when it was being sold as to not let it be lost but to be admired!

Waiting on the blocks for the lathe base so cracking on with stripping the boiler down ready for inspection and testing. Britannia Boiler by Daniel Hamblin, on Flickr Knocked up a pair of support blocks using some spare timber from the floor reinforcement work. Boiler Less Smokebox by Daniel Hamblin, on Flickr With time available I had a go at getting the smokebox off - luckily at this point of the stripdown it was only held on by two screws on the lower side. Smokebox by Daniel Hamblin, on Flickr The smokebox still needs a lot of cleaning, should be easier now its separated from the boiler. Regards, Dan

Great to see a Brit coming back to life. You should find that the smoke box door ring is a push fit in the barrel so will make refitting the plumbing in there much easier with the door and ring out of the way.

Your granddad has made a very nice model there. Are you going to put a revised cab and roof on it? Ron

Thanks chaps.
nonort - must admit I thought it was silver soldered in, but it does look like a push fit from some angles. Should be clearer once all the muck is cleaned out.
Ron - it has crossed my mind. The cab is a separate assembly to the platform it sits on, so I could produce a prototypical one that uses the same screw holes. It would also need mounting holes for the reverser handle gearbox. One of my longer term aspirations is to build a 3 1/2" BR Std 4 4-6-0 to the LBSC design, detailed as 75027 (I drove this at the Bluebell back in 2004), so it would be good practice in getting the BR Standard style right. More likely to be done on its next 4 year hydraulic ticket as, with a bit more experience under my belt at that point, I want to give it a more major service and repaint.
Regards,
Dan

More progress made with the boiler stripdown. Smokebox Tubeplate by Daniel Hamblin, on Flickr Smokebox tubeplate showing the superheater flange (since had the gasket cleaned off) - Grandad built it with the alternative dome mounted regulator. Firebox Backhead by Daniel Hamblin, on Flickr Firebox backhead with all fittings removed bar the blower valve, as that doesn't go into the water space. Really pleased to find the backhead has silver soldered bushes for the fittings, especially as the lower gauge glass one sheared off as I was trying to undo it. Pinky coloured fracture face would suggest the brass fitting has suffered from dezincification - the replacement will be made in bronze. Stripped Boiler by Daniel Hamblin, on Flickr The boiler stripped down ready for visual inspection by one of the CSME's boiler testers. Back to servicing the tender and cleaning up the front bogie in the interim. Regards, Dan

Just a note to say how much I'm enjoying this thread and how very useful it is. Just the pictures of the frames with everything in place are so much easier to fathom than trying to work it all out from LBSC's drawings! So thank you and best of luck, I'm following with great interest, hopefully mine will be done in a few years! Jon.

Thanks Jon, glad they are of some use. Hopefully more progress reports will be forthcoming soon as I've now got my lathe installed and the workshop is nearly ready to start the serious stuff. If you want any photos of specific areas that I (or simplyloco) haven't covered just ask Best of luck with your build - I look forward to seeing progress too. Regards, Dan

For John (simplyloco) - the injector is definitely floating on the original LBSC design: Injector by Daniel Hamblin, on Flickr Taken in 2005 when I was starting to work out what was needed to overhaul the engine. Regards, Dan

Workshop fit out, a shed roof and canopy rebuild plus the day job have kept me away from this, but Christmas is a chance to catch up. Firebox End by Daniel Hamblin, on Flickr Drilling out the lower gauge glass bush to remove the sheared off remnant of the brass fitting. Lower Gauge Glass Bush by Daniel Hamblin, on Flickr Success! Drilled out with a hand drill (5.1mm to 5.5mm bits in 0.1mm increments) and then re-tapped with Grandad's original 1/4" x 40tpi taps. Little bit of damage to the threads at the top back but I don't think it will be a problem, it tested ok with the identically threaded top gauge glass fitting. There was a lot of hardened scale between it and the inner firebox plate that I've managed to scrape out. Suspect there is more on the throatplate side so I'll flush the boiler through to try an get rid of it. Regards, Dan

For Jon (nobbysideways) - Grandad modified the reverser on his loco to include a position indicator on the main spindle. Modified Britannia Reverser by Daniel Hamblin, on Flickr I'm not at the stage of needing this back on the loco yet, but when I do I can measure it up for more details. Regards, Dan

Apologies for the lack of updates, unfortunately the RMWeb gallery is not available at the moment so can't provide photos of progress.
Good news though - the significantly cleaner boiler was inspected by our societies' tester at last night's meeting and he thought it good enough to try a hydraulic test on. Twice working pressure as the original paperwork has gone AWOL. I picked up a rather neat USB endoscope for my phone that has allowed a good look inside at the crown stays, lateral stays and even the side stays with a bit of careful jiggling around.
So, on to making some bronze screws and studs for the blanking plates and a set of brass plugs for the bushes.
I've also built and tested a turning cradle for the loco chassis. Mostly wood construction, but all the interfaces to the chassis are metal.
Regards,
Dan

Great news, any details on the endoscope would be great too!
Good luck with the test.

I was sitting here thinking to myself, now that would be a handy thing to have, I have one that plugs into the laptop which I use for the car. I then looked at your link Dan and noticed the USB adapter for the phone, it looked familiar and so I had a dig around in my phone box and there it was, never been used... so I can do the same thing with my phone....cheers... Very interesting to say the least. Would love to see the turning frame you mentioned. I need to knock up something to assist getting the Dart on its side.
cheers

Dan, im just building a 3 1/2 brit. It looks like there is cladding on boiler if so can you measure the diameter of the smoke box, im trying to work out what size it needs to support the cladding. Thanks Stephen

Thanks Stephen Hi Stephen, it is as per the LBSC drawings - the cladding is actually slightly proud of the smokebox and the boiler band at the join hides that small step. Will confirm with measurements on Saturday when I can get back in the workshop. Regards, Dan

I didn't think the LBSC drawings had cladding on the Boiler, I think I need to revisit them!
Westlin, I think your 3.5 Brit would make a great build thread, would you consider taking and sharing some photos? I'm finding seeing the work of other 3.5 brit owners very useful.
