There is some beautiful detail work there Mike. You're to be congratulated for building such a faithful miniature replica of a great locomotive, I am a bit biased towards Britannias and to be honest I think you're far better off working as you are without 'the words and music' of Spink or Perrier or anyone else.
Stay safe and at least one kangaroo apart social distancing.
Jim.
Hi Jim, so be honest I can be a bit of a wuss at times and a bit of hand holding would be nice. Luckily I have yours and Steve's (Springcrocus) excellent threads to fall back on.

You are too kind Mike, for superb attention to detail and craftsmanship you and Pete Greenglade are hard to beat.

You also are too kind Jim. Can't manage a kangaroo for the social distancing but we do have wild wallabies in Derbyshire if that helps. ššš

No problems Mike you just need two Wallabies for the proper distance to be kept.

Hi everybody, I've moved onto the front steps for this installment. Here is a picture of the left hand front step on Britannia. You will note that it is bolted to the gussets that we fitted last time. This photo also poses a quandary as the strengthening plate at the top is not fitted on the other side and I can not find another photo with this feature. With this in mind I decided to omit the bracket reasoning that it is a later addition. The drawings show the steps bolted to the footplate which is clearly not correct and just wouldn't look right, the step fixing being quite visible below the valance.
I covered making the steps earlier when I made the tender and these are basically the same. I decided to use brass as I used up my supply of nickel silver on the tender steps. Here are the step blanks after being cut with the V cutter in the mill on the fold lines and the step treads done the same way plus examples of the folded up items. It is still beyond me to fold these up without the groves and get two the same.
The lightening holes were next cut out using Steve's (springcrocus) trick of using a step drill in the mill. These are the steps after silver soldering ready for the non slip tread overlays the same as on the tender.....
.....and finally given a coat of satin back prior to being stored away ready for final fitting at a later date.
Well that's another item ticked of the list. I will have to have a think about what comes next, the support angles and bracket for the footplate all want adding at some point, plus the greasing points. I originally had a thought to start detailing from the front so that is probably what I will do, watch this space. .
All the best.
Mike

Look superb Mike, very realistic with the tread pattern. Is the 'step' drill specially made for drilling steps . Sorry couldn't resist that one. Chris D

Fantastic work as always Mike! Where did you get to see Britannia? Is she still running? The steps look brilliant 70000 is currently stopped for overhaul at Crewe Diesel Depot, the home base for Locomotive Services Ltd., having run a hot big end bearing on a Fellsman tour in the summer. It was due to be stopped this Autumn anyway as its 10 year boiler certificate was up, so by stopping it earlier it should be available sooner next year. 70 years old on 1st January 2021 too. Regards, Dan

If you look at John Johnsonās Britannia builder website, at the bottom of his index of articles there is a list of very useful websites with lots of prototype pictures. I have never seen Britannia in the flesh, the photo is taken from one of these sites. Mike

I Nobby, they are exceptional photos and I'm sure I will find them really useful to add the little details you know I love so much. I'm sure other Britannia builders on this forum will also find them useful if that is ok.
Many thanks

I've just found a clear picture of a detail I've been trying to find for weeks. Also the backhead photos are very clear unlike those I took of Ollie which for some reason all came out blurred.
Again, many thanks

Lovely Steps. Some time in the future I will need to form the famous FRONT JOGGLE. Yes I measured several and they are a STANDARD pressing or forming. I need 2 pairs for the Class 2
By that time I may have the planned CNC MILL up and running... To carve them out or a form tool. I will have the space for it now we have the extension.
Got to Stand on the Footplate of Oliver Cromwell when she was in Plymouth 2011 Great Britain week. Very impressive.

I got to climb all over Ollie when it was in the shed at the Great Central a few years back. Very impressive machines. I asked one of the guys in the shed if I could take a few photos and he said āhelp your self, just donāt fall off, the paperwork would be horrendousā.
