Hi Abby,
it overlaps and is bolted to the inner firebox wrapper where it extends past the foundation ring.

Thanks John , another mystery solved , by the way I was looking at the data sheets for PTFE etc on the RS website and I noted that the glass-filled PEEK has the lowest co-efficient of expansion of the whole bunch and is recommended for use with high temperature steam, I was wondering which grade you tried for piston valves before settling with PTFE sleeves.

Hi Abby,
I used the Peek bearing grade (RS call it black PEEK). I think I looked at the glass filled variety but didn't give it a try as I thought it may not be suitable for a moving part. Might be worth a try though. The black PEEK seems to be the same expansion as the glass filled though.

I'd like to thank Graham (Sapper) for inviting me to the Nottingham track and firing up his superb Black 5 "George Stephenson" last month while I was in the UK. Here is Graham and his masterpiece Have a look here for other photos and take a look at my photo stream while you're there. www.flickr.com/photos/mkrj/3615889907/

Nice to see such a good Stephenson version – isn't this the version you intend to do Baggo?

She is beautiful , we had one in our club in 7.25" G ,the owner( builder )was in his 80's and not well , I think the engine kept him alive until he finished it and gave it a run couple times and then sadly passed away .The engine was sent to UK by his family .

Hi
John / Baggo please could you send me a copy of your scanned construction series for the black five. I am hoping to get my princess marina finished this year and am considering stepping upto 5" scale, but before I take the plunge It would be good to have a read through.
Many thanks
steve

Hi This thread has been quiet since 2009 so I hope the subject of Don Young's Black 5 is still of interest. I have just obtained the drawings and will spend this summer collecting information, and hopefully talking to a few people, before collecting parts to start a build next year. I would really like to know if anyone has assembled a list of corrections/modifications and perhaps I can make direct contact with members 44767, Baggo and abby, and any others, to hear where they are up to. Does anyone know exactly which copies of LLAS contained the construction notes for chapters 1 to 13? Many thanks, Norm.

Hi Norm, I am still working on my Black 5 but other projects slow down its progress. There are a few minor errors but nothing serious that I can remember. Which valve gear do you intend building? Done to the drawing the Stephenson gear works beautifully. In fact Don mentions in LLAS that this gear was the first full size one he'd done which when scaled down fits his criteria for model valve gear.

Reg, many thanks. Reeves have very few of these LLAS copies, so imagine my delight at finding that my SME club had all the bound copies in the library! I had already bought the Reeves photocopies of chapters 1 to 13 and they are OK, although missing a few margins and all the photographs are naturally indistinct. The Reeves drawing copies however are very good quality.
Mike, thanks for the reply. The fact that there is already a lovely Stephenson out there, and you are building another one, means I will keep with the Walscherts! Otherwise Stephenson gear would be a choice I would be very happy with. I hope to build mine in two years and then steam fairly heavily for the next five visiting as many tracks as possible. I will add as much build detail as possible with Dave Noble's and Doug Hewson's parts.
Regarding omissions, I notice already that the boiler drawing has no mention of the alternative top feed locations (dimensions missing), because presumably DY knew all were aware of the various LMS Derby changes, but if somebody built the boiler exactly as he has drawn there would be no top feed at all! I am also wondering if the concept for the blower pipe connection between valve and smokebox (threaded copper pipe) is the best that can be achieved, but as I am still learning I am happy to be corrected.
As you live in NZ perhaps you can fill in some half-information I have. I understand that the lovely 44767 in this thread above was built by Graham (Sapper) who is no longer with us, and that this engine was sent from NZ to the UK? This must be the one recently sold by Station Road, and is the new owner known to this forum?
What I am happy to do is just make contact with other builders over this summer and swap news and ideas.
Regards
Norm

Hi Norm
It would be great if you could report your construction in words and photos, either here, on your own website or via one of the many excellent free blog sites.
Good luck with it

Norm,
I don't think Sapper's Black 5 came from New Zealand; he built it himself early on giving feedback to Don as he went. There was another 44767 which came to NZ with the builder when on commission in the Royal Navy. He then returned to the UK and the model was finished just in time to be exhibited before the chap returned to NZ to retire. Don Young speaks of this one in LLAS as a Black 5 which has travelled several thousand miles but not one in steam!
Graham's model was bought by Jason (on this forum) I believe through Station Road Steam. I'm not sure if he still has it but he's very proud to own it.

The x royal naval officer that went to NewZealand to retire was the x chairman of Portsmouth and District Model Engineering Society his name was Fred Kennedy i believe with a rank of commander. Hope this helps!
