Hello John,
Well that was a useful find.......Earlier--when I mentioned about using bull head rails I didn't know that Company did them...........
Will you be putting a screw-coupling onto your hook ?? Nice, delicate lamp irons by the way... age has not "wearied" you I can see.

Yes, I am really looking forward to making a display stand which does the Stirling justice. The kit arrives on Monday so watch this space! Not sure about another coupling though, as I am getting quite weary now... John

Now that I have a decent sales prop I can get on and finish the Stirling. Jobs on the tender this afternoon comprised cow catcher irons and hanging chains: I couldn't not fit them could I... I was not looking forward to making two more horse hooks but then I realised that they weren't needed at the rear of the loco! Sighs of relief all round... Thanks for all the 'likes' for the display track, it's good to get fellow MEs' reactions.. John Taken more or less in the dark as the flash was a bit harsh on the paintwork! I've just noticed that I have to redo the white lining at the bottom of the buffer beam: I obviously hadn't 'fixed' it. The headlamps should arrive tomorrow from Blackgates: whoopee!

Looking great!
Rear chains did, however, have hooks - if they didn't, you might get a situation where two hook-less ends were facing each other and couldn't be coupled up..... although, with the tender close coupled to your driving truck, I bet no one notices.
I will try to emulate you lighting technique for photos. I am still appalled at the lousy finish on my work pieces which the unremitting glare of the flash appears to reveal, but which the naked eye does not notice.
Best wishes
Malcolm

I Chose the Wrong Headlamps! The three headlamps arrived from Blackgates today: they are a JC Tipton product, and very lovely. Unfortunately, there is no GNR lamp available, so I chose a GWR lamp as it has the carrying handle in the correct orientation. What I couldn't see from the very poor illustration in their online catalogue is that the mounting slot is on the sides, so they are going back. I should also mention that the catalogue price is £15.20 each, but I was charged £19.47 each, and with carriage and VAT on top of both the bill was over £73.00! I mentioned this discrepancy to the lady at Blackgates and asked why this wasn't pointed out to me at purchase, and there was no apology: just '"Oh everything's gone up lately..." I'll make my own! If you had been a proper trainspotter you would have realised that the GWR had different mountings. Interested to see you are going to make them so please post the progress as I need some for a mid Victorian Scottish loco and I would appreciate pointers.

At a pinch, you could use the BR round bodied lamp which was actually the late pattern LNER design - and then argue that you are modelling the loco in preservation... !

For those who can see the image, what is that gadget over the RH cylinder? With pipework suggesting a similar gadget on the LHS, is it a lubricator? or an Indicator? or what? I don't recall seeing anything of that sort on a GN single before...
Sorry if this is taking the thread off piste.

Malcolm Consideribg its proximity to the cylinder I would guess it's a lubricator but that is just a guess having not researched the prototype at all Pete

Thanks Dave, very helpful. The lamps are simpler than the GWR ones! John
