Pushing hard to finish the tender this week. This afternoon I made a pillar and handle for the injector valve, hopefully matching the brake pillar I made earlier. The various pipes are all connected now, so I just have to fit the rear vacuum pipe and lamp irons and it is complete! I haven't decided whether I'm going to make and fit a coal frame even though I bought lots of 3/16" half round brass: in my view it makes it look like a farm hay cart! Headlamps! Thanks for the pointers, and I found this photo in my LTC Rolt book. The lamp is simple and quite small. I've ordered some 12mm lenses from u no where... 20201014_192720[1] by inkaboat, on Flickr This is just a tryout using a bit of 1/2" sq brass and some small tube. I don't have any wire small enough, but this was only about an hour's work and I learnt a lot. I'll post some sequence pics when I make them for real! Looks like I'll be doing some relining soon! 20201014_200858[1] by inkaboat, on Flickr

Excellent start John...I was doing some reading on the LNER forum regarding GNR lamp colour...IIRC one contributor stated that GNR lamps were red up to around 1900, then black until changing to white in the 1920's. I have no idea how accurate this information is. I thought that they were red before going white from when researching GNR to LNER lamps for my own build but this was some years ago so not entirely sure.

If you can get access to copies of ME from around 1942, F.C.Hambleton did a series on loco lamps through the years. Unfortunately I only have two issues out of that series but I am certain he covered the GNR as one of mine is about the LNER lamps and he refers back to the constituent companies.
He also says a bit about lamps (including a few drawings) in "Locomotives Worth Modelling", but not the GNR, as I checked in case there was anything there to help!

Hi John,
is it possible that you can provide a photo of the underside of the tender. I am seeking ideas on how to manage the connections between the tender and locomotive.

I have to make the Hay Rick!I decided that in the interests of authenticity - and my bank balance- I should make the hay rick. I have spent all afternoon and evening on it, as it is a real nightmare. The half round is supplied coiled and is hard as nails, so I had to anneal each four foot length. Pick it up and it bends, kinks and flops, so I had a great time straightening it! I hammered it out on my 24" wide surface plate, after I'd pulled it through the fibre vice jaws a few times! A few pics: I've used steel brackets riveted to the rails and they just sit inside the flare. I've attached the upper and lower rails, I'll finish the thing tomorrow. I didn't notice the surface flaws in the beading until I started cleaning it up. It is a PITA... John

Brian Hi Brian My apologies but I can't find any pics in my library. I can take some tomorrow if you like, but there is nothing special about my plumbing! Regards John Hi John, thanks for the offer. I see from the photograph that there are (possibly) 4 connections, 3 rubber tube and 1 screw connection. The screw connection I assume is for the tender pump requiring a high pressure connection. Being rigid does the underside show a coiled transition to enable it to flex when there is relative angular movement between tender and locomotive? The other connections are for the injector water feed via the valve operated on the LHS of the tender and for the axle pump return via a locomotive mounted valve. If there is another flexible then I can't guess what the purpose is. What I am interested to see is how far back from the tender drag beam did you anchor the copper tubes and the transition from copper to rubber tubing. Brian

Hay Rack ready for painting
I have a few painting jobs to do so this can wait for those. I'm happy with it but I never want to see another one ever again! I don't like bending flimsy stuff like this, but here goes... The moment of truth. Will it fit properly? Heart in Mouth. Yes it does!!! Looks Okay from a distance, but I have to 'iron out' a few slight wobbles!

After being loaded with coal a few times I bet the original wasn't very straight. Yours looks pretty good to me.

More On HeadlampsThese could be black or red in the period being modelled. Red wins for me every time! The lenses came from uno where: £1.85 for 20, and the silvering I used a 10mm punch in ally foil and attached it to the lens with a spot of super glue. Effective or what? Oh, before I forget, I slapped some 2k satin black on the hay rick...

This headlamp size is much more in keeping than the monsters supplied by the trade! I am finding that much of the stuff over the counter is over scale. John
