The lagging around the pipes wasn't done to keep the heat in but to prevent burning the crew's hands when negotiating the running boards.

What a beauty Barry. The 32 class brings back lots of memories of them coming through Katoomba either heading for Sydney or double heading up from Valley Heights.
The coal shovel tucked into the cab side hand rail is so typical as was the driver's Gladstone bag sitting on the outside ledge of the turret tender, if attached. The owner will be delighted.

Jim Thanks Jim. I've been thinking about getting some modeling clay and making up some Gladstone bags and water bags to place on my engines. Be something a bit different to do.

Nice to see a Wombat well advanced. I wonder how many are actively under construction.

The Stuart Verticle Engine is a great project and one I enjoyed building too. Your grandson is very fortunate to have you as his model engineering mentor too. I must stop making excuses and bring the rail motor over for a run too.
Regards Jim

Hi Jim, What about the Britannia? Still waiting to see her stretching her legs & to see what you think of the double entry pedicott
Hi Barry, Nice work on the vertical, as Jim says your grandy is very lucky to have a great tutor The Wombat is coming on nicely, seem to remember reading the build series, well at least parts of it, in the Australian ME
Cheers Kerrin

Sad to say a combination of factors has meant the Britannia is more or less confined to the workshop and a short length of test track. That said the double petticoat works well in drawing up a good fire. Being on a test bed and not under load I can't comment on the exhaust sound though.
The 400 Class railmotor is easily transported as it breaks down into components that are easily transported and stored in the car. I've had it running on a private track and once a couple of family matters are sorted will take it over to the club's extensive track to give it a proper test run.
Cheers
Jim.

I have got the wombat running on air but it needs some special bushes in some parts of the valve gear and I have put some temporary brass bushes in their place so that I could time the thing. It seems to run ok. I must be going soft in the head because while waiting for the bushes I needed something to take my mind off some serious health issues with my wife. I have had some wheel castings for a NSW 30T class engine for a long time so in a fit of madness, fished them out and machined them. What good are wheels without cylinders? Ben at E&J Winter had suitable castings so after purchasing a set machined them also. Suitable frames have been drawn up for laser cutting. Does this mean that I am building yet another engine? I expect that the men in white coats, carrying straight jackets will be knocking on the door shortly. Have pitty on me as I must be going bonkers.

Hi Barry, Nah not going bonkers….. not doing something will drive you bonkers! Dad attributes his workshop to his longevity…. either that or the nightly dram!
Cheers Kerrin

This is what a 30T looks like. If I were to finish it it would be a saturated one like this and have the same 6-wheel. 'P'Class tender

It's interesting they seemed to have hacked the back half off the tank loco cab rather than giving it a new one.
That's quite a pretty tender.
Looking forward to seeing it come together.

Great to see the valve gear in isolation. Looks beautiful, and of course, the 13 looks superb.

After being buried under a mountain of cast iron swarf I ended up with 6 horn blocks and 6 axleboxes. The laser-cut frames will arrive soon and I will be able to see if my work done so far will fit into the available space. most of the horn block material came from an old unmachined cast iron angle plate and an unmachined chuck backing plate. Consequently, the swarf was a bit overwhelming, resulting in a hefty garbage bin.
