Despite some ser ious family health issues I have been chipping away at the 30 class 4-6-0. The workshop is good therapy when things are looking a bit grim. I received the laser-cut frames and was able to hang the previously built bits and pieces to them. I experienced a few bugs here and there which is a problem when pieces are made without the assembly to fit to but it seems to be working out OK.

Hi Barry,
I was very concerned to hear of the serious health issues you mention Barry but as you say being able to focus on modelling is helpful and theraputic. i do hope things improve for you. Look forward to catching up when I next get across to the club and with the railmotor on board for a test run. The loco is looking superb too.
regards Jim

I'm OK Jim, Anne is very ill with cancer and kidney failure and is not expected to be with us for very long. It has been a terrible year and the workshop has helped a lot when I get the time to get in there. We should make our 56th—wedding anniversary in November but Christmas is doubtful.

i can fully understand what you both are going through having been there with our youngest son Guy. The workshop and support of friends helps but it's still a dark path to travel. Take care Jim

The loco is looking magnificent. As we know it's a very difficult and stressful time for you and Ann and our thoughts are with you both. Kindest regards, Jim

You may notice that I have had to move the bogie a bit further forward on its centre pin to get clearance on the brake and cylinder drain rigging.

Thanks for that Kerin, It is one day at a time but life must go on. My enthusiasm for the job seems to be coming back and I am spending a few hours a day in the shed. I have had a real hang-up about those side rods but I will have to get my teeth and do them at some time.

Hi Barry, I lost dad 5 months ago, mum passed 36 years ago, he had been on his own since, spent every day in the workshop. Attributed that to his mental health. Pretty sure you & he met at one of NZ biannual conventions. His NZR WW is coming to mine, along with my loco which has resided at his loco works for a very long time, once I make room for both!
Cheers Kerrin

Hi Barry, as my dad used to say "old age is a bugger" and he's right I think. Like you I find I'm spending far less time in the workshop and a lot of time dozing away in my favourite chair. The rail motor sits quietly waiting for me to take it out for another run but I keep think 'next month' Your loco looks superb and in my mind I can hear the compressor 'panting away' having brought its train down the grade from Mt Victoria.
All the best Jim

HI Jim. Talking of the inertia of older age, I haven't seen you use that little Beam Governer fork yet... Regards John
