No problem it was a worthy point and defiantly something that needs attending to on my part This evening I spent drilling all the holes for the brake fixings on the center beams and cutting the groves for the iron work on top of all the centres and cross nearly ready to re assemble to carry on. All done with an old manual hand drill ( so my 3 year old can turn the handle and help he loved it ) To be fair all the holes have been done with it as feel have more control than a power drill And can do it once the kids are in bed. And cad drew the brake block ready for resin printing a couple of days ago

Inbetween fixing a half shaft oil seal on a Landrover today had time to cut 4long slots in a thick scrap plate of steel to batch produce these brake shoe support hangers for the middle beams of the wagon Need a little finishing off but think they will work ok and better than the folded sheet steel used in other designs and far cheeper than the cast ones considering it’s from an off cut of scrap that had been sat on the end of the vice all year and there is still enough to cut another 6 or 8 from the plate

Only a little time today to progress so started making the brake tumblers Plenty left to do My plan is to open the top and bottom hole up and solder rod with a through hole in to give the correct profile like the cast once’s My intention is to make two out of the stock and should be left with enough to make a third/forth and have a strip from the top for other things if I’m careful with the cutting out the square end for the leaver will have a washer and a split pin fitted.

I didn’t notice at the time by I fitted the middle beams backwards doh!!!!!! Still I noticed when fitting the spring hangers and corrected it the hoops should face the centre of the wagon and block supports the wheels.

I have been toying with the idea of what wood to use for the planks as you can’t get 15.44mm I could get 15mm or 18 but thought that would be a lot of thinning from 18 for less than half a mm difference per plank Meaning total hight would be visually reduced by 3.5mm ish as I have not cut any of the iron work for the body yet now was the time to decide. So I decided to go with the 15mm for simplicity /time efficiency and cost knowing I would have to add a filler somewhere on the base as it’s quite a specific size at After purchasing some 4x2.4m 6mx15mm wood lengths and chopping them down I have very little left which is good but need plenty more back to the shop I go. For another 4 At least it’s a common available size and relatively cheep my 3 year old loved helping cut the wood and has asked me when we can do it again tonight. Guess what I’m doing at the weekend… I was left with a 6mm gap one end so moved all the planks the other way to the photo cut a thin strip and filled it with a slice at the closed end so it is hidden under the wagon side planks unless your looking for it you wouldn’t noticed

Little more work on the brake tumblers fitted the inserts Thinned out the plate and drilled the outer holes 4.8mm just to big enough to fit 3/16th rod then cut some 3/16 rod center drilled and drilled just over 1/4” in to each end of two pieces Chopped them up and cleaned them and pushed them in to the plate ready for silver soldering Then I have roughly marked final shape Next up is the another center to make with square end and then make the square ends of both smaller so it fits in the hangers and can be test fitted on the wagon

Have all the timber cut now 19.2m of timber to make then wooden planks I have probably 1.5m excess out of 8x 2.4m sections. I have also rough cut the brake tumblers and started to file one plenty more to do to get the shape and clean them up I have got one centre left to create too and then trial fits before soldering them

It’s been a while since I have posted anything or done much on the wagon Today I finished the brake cranks Disassembled everything and acid dipped the steel parts The acid is is zep limescale remover available in B&Q and Amazon I used it neet strait from the bottle Zep Commercial Calcium, Lime and Rust Cleaner,1L amzn.eu/d/avut9GFthis is after they have been in a hour or two It worked really well in a food container and just left with the lid on else it stinks The tumblers took a little longer but everything else took about an hour or two and came out shiny Then I have etch primed them all Currently hanging to dry in the shed will give them a coat of black tomorrow

So does the acid provide a good key for the paint?

As promised a before and after of the acid etch These however have been in a week as I forgot about them But the same results happen after a few hours No trace of rust left but some slight discolouration of the steel where it’s reacted in some places

Next up was the hook assembly to silver solder the hook blank to the Shalford and profile they we done by step jointing and bolting together then silver soldering. You can still see the bolt in the bottom joint whereas I have filed away the other. To give a smoth solid hook assembly Going to need to trim down the length slightly I think but I willworry about that once fitted with the tie rods in place assembly

Those of you that have built these wagons what did you use for the iron work on the out side of the planks
Do you find a supplier of the correct width or was it all hand cut ?
