Nearly all the wood work is fitted now and the buffer stocks are fitted to the other end Next step is to adjust and fit the buffer stops then flip the wagon and clamp to the bench to make sure it’s nice and square before I tighten all the ties I don’t plan on using glue to fix it all together to aid repairs and adjustments later when all tightened it is all solid anyway so not much need really dab of thread seal on the ties to prevent them easily undoing and it should be fine

Through out the build I have used mainly metric screws due to the costs of ba today the body screws arrived and I realised quite how small they are m1.2(12ba) Most of the fitting used are a mixture of largest are m2(8ba) holding w ions some are m1.6(10ba) tie rods and now m1.2(12ba) for the body planks These can be picked up extremely cheeply However I have used 7ba threads for the large ties This is 100 screws!!! And 100nuts

Yeah! It's a reminder of just how much hardware went into the railway age...

Yeah! It's a reminder of just how much hardware went into the railway age... I recon it will need lots more than the 100!! On the body looking at the folded ends ur talking 40 on one corner!!!!! 12per stanchon or strap It’s going to go hundreds very easily! Not wagon related but… I remember when I did all the rivit detail on my class 08 5” that took 800 rivits bolts studs to get it correct every rivit or stud or bump on that is brass or steel drilled and glued in! (I did rivit count the body to photos lo🤦♂️I am a little ashamed of that) but it looks the part

Tiny bit done to day cut the stations for the fixed end and test mockup using two blanks as the headstock and a half plank to represent the floor from here I can gauge the length and cut the tapers

Test fit of the fixed end and looks ok quite happy about that excuse the none aligned planks currently they are balanced!! And then continued work on the floor by making the hinge plates for the frame and doors and laying planks out to decide on what width of door works

Which size door do people think in the bottom? As I have used 15mm planks because they are commercially available and easy to get hold of the actual size for the doors won’t quite match up
I have managed to get the debth of the door right or within a tiny bit using 2x18mm and 1x15mm to give the change in size as per drawing
The width is more the issue going an extra 2planks wide fowells the iron work underneath Making it less means il have to notch planks which might look odd
Reducing the door width by 2 planks is quite a noticeable reduction but everything lines up nicely

I love the wood work. Not something I'll be ever able to do myself, I have no affinity with wood. But I love to look at it. M1.2 only is scary if you have to tap the holes yourself into a steel plate that you only have one off. I remember when I did all the rivit detail on my class 08 5” that took 800 rivits bolts studs to get it correct every rivit or stud or bump on that is brass or steel drilled and glued in! (I did rivit count the body to photos lo🤦♂️I am a little ashamed of that) but it looks the part I feel your pain. I was thinking that the prototype I choose could be done with welding so no rivets. Wrong, it would just wrap around itself if I ever tried to weld it. So I'm stuck with hundreds of rivets. And I have never in my live used one before. So it will probably end up a big frustration and a lot of swear words. If it ever gets finished.

Looking forward to getting the floor done so I can say the frame is finished and really crack on with the body. Trying to get all the things that need to attach to the frame done before I put the floor down permanently

Feel like got quite a bit done this week Decided on a 6plank center which makes the middle doors a decent size and only slightly smaller than I originally planned Meaning I need to shave 2-3mm off the outside planks at each end which is easily done and hides under the side walls nicely Made the hinge plates for the bottom doors and fitted them while testing and making th doors work the middle planks are just placed in and First of the bottom doors is made and more importantly when I remove the support it falls open with out catching anything !!!

Before I decide to fix the floor thought I best tighten and the under frame up and fit the buffer stops and springs before I make it difficult to access And I couldn’t resist putting the wheels back on For a quick photo First time it’s been together with hooks wheels and buffers

Little more work on the bottom doors tonight Spent ages working on the bends on this latch 4 attempts then finaly worked out a how it worked and b how to make it work in the space I have. Then made the little flags to act as the hinges once it was filed down to shape and size they fitted nicely and worked well The bottom arm of the latch is a little long currently as didn’t want to cut it off then find I cut it too short after all the work to make them Above is fitted Just as the latch is about to release the door Just as it goes verticals the door slips past and drops away. When you push the door back up it pushes the latch out the way till it can slide under the door and then locks it self with the doors weight till the retaining pin is inserted(I’ve not made that yet) I’m rather pleased with these

I've been following your wagon build with interest, it's really starting to come together and makes a change to see this side of model engineering. You are making a really good job of it.
I really didn't know that wooden framed wagons were still being built that late, and that steel framing would have been exclusively the norm. You live and learn.

Tony Thanks it’s quite a fun build too minimal machine work almost all of it is done by hand tools(up until very recently )I have even been using a hand drill now I’m drilling steel sheet i have swapped to a battery one but all the wood work is hand cut chiselled and drilled. Filed sanded u name it all with out electric (bar the lights in the room. ) Re the wagons they were still defo still building them beyond 1930one of the other wagons a moy one I was basing it on too is a 1923 design wagon build in 1938

Back to the wagon this evening And built and fit the other bottom door couldn’t resist a test fit with the floor places there Only one of the catches is fitted as I managed to bend the hinge while filing it so re soldered and straitened ready for next time .only two holes to drill and that will be fitted and both bottom doors will be operational.

Finished the second bottom door tonight so that’s now all working too and test fitted the end stations to see how wide the final plank needs to be Next up I thinks is the final bits of the suspension then refit all the brakes so I can then move on to the rest of the iron work to hold the sides

Fitted the bump stops and springs along with the axle box retainers and brake gear to make sure everything worked together and doors didn’t strike anything Which was a complete success!! Pop the brakes on and they work!!! Propper mile stone I think other than cutting bolts down now Very little left to make for the under frame I need to make the door but want the side door in place first to make sure it’s right, a few rope hooks and wagon plates to make all of which can be done at any point really If anyone has any close up photos of the plates would be really usefull to see so I can 3d model them To print

Not really had time to do much this week but did get a chance to get it on the track and check it’s all square and rolls correctly. Which it should do took me long enough to tighten up the chassie square!! It was shunted back and forth all afternoon by my kids and it ran perfectly. Didn’t come off once 🤦♂️Couldn’t find any chain so plastic garden chain did the job
