Hi Paul,
yes I was offered the choice of a ceramic or TC. I can't remember the whys and wherefores of each....
JB, Yes! Unfortunately I missed out Anglo Scot Abrasives from my list of suppliers at the back. Luckily google their name and there they are..
Chris.

Not a lot of progress lately due to 'Other Interests'! However, I'm now looking at the platework on the RHS of the Brit, but, I can assure you, this is getting tedious! I need to accommodate my whistle and injector valves into the running board, as you can see here. By pure luck, and I mean this, the injector valve sits just nicely on the running board. I feel a bit more motivated now so I'll do a bit more tomorrow! I have to get all the platework made and primed before we leave GB for Portugal on 26th March. We are leaving earlier this year as we've just about had enough of this appalling weather. JB

Moving on from Smifffy's playful jibe about finishing the beast I cracked on a bit today. I dumped the sectional running boards as I couldn't get the symmetry I wanted (too B. difficult!) but retained the separate valances held on by M1.2 bolts. The boards are slotted for the steam pipes, and all I have to do now is the twiddly bits at the front! Bit cold in the workshop, took three hours at 2kW to bring it to a decent temp! JB

....that's more like it JB :-)
It's (she's ?) looking great, let's see that shove from you to finish it off.
Of course, I was throwing stones from within my glasshouse, as progress on my Scot has trickled to almost nothing of late.

Lovely. That loco has a strong 'presence', much like a real Brit
Stick at it, you are doing a fine job

Smokeplates LBSC didn't like these 'excrescences' as he called them, and he didn't intend to fit them on his engine. I think they look fine. I had a go at soldering the beading on, but I forgot to anneal it and got into trouble! I've stripped it off and I'll have to get some more. The angle piece is a specified at 3/16" x 20g, but it looks far to big to me so we'll have another go and make a smaller one - I have smaller nuts now so I can get into small spaces..... A couple of progress pics: Using the Proxxon to drill two rows of 1.25mm holes on a 10mm pitch. The setup is crude but perfectly adequate for this job. Using two pieces of HSS to facilitate bending on a tight radius. Cutting out the smokeplates using my friend the jewellers' saw. You can see the rail on the RHS of the picture: it's huge! Try not to notice something I prepared earlier on the middle right! Measure twice and cut once....... Soon be finished Smifffy! JB

JB, you're going to have to tell me about your third hand and arm.
I have yet to figure out how to take a picture of me working when both hands are involved with the work!

Nice work John. I agree with you re the smoke deflectors, I think they add a real 'presence' to an already pretty impressive locomotive. Like you I've found Jewelers saws with the right blades are brilliant for a whole range of tasks. Looks like you'll be out on the track in no time, meanwhile back in the boiler shop here the copper is aging nicely.

Blimey you and Smiffy are hard task masters! Fancy pushing a poor old age hardened senior cit. to get out in the blazing heat to light up a bloody big blow torch to melt silver solder and not even the offer of a soothing ale. Oh well I suppose if you both insist I'd better get on with it then. Jim

If it's too warm for you Jim, you're most welcome to come and use my workshop. We're in the middle of yet another body cold spell over here and it's bloody freezing. That's my excuse for lack of progress :-)
Actually, I just need to fit the inside eccentric rod and that will be the valve gear completed and time to start on the tender.

Andrew You might be mistaken on this occasion because as we were driving south near Madrid in early April, we met loads of Brits heading North to escape the appalling Spanish winter weather! Ho Hum... JB
