Ian; G'day JohnS I was concerned that JB was going to great efforts to get a realistic looking backhead when there was an obvious elephant in the room. 12"to 1' locos had 2 gauge glasses. Ah, I get it now! The *full size* has 2 gauge glasses. I was concerned that there was some new miniature boiler law stating that 2 gauge glasses were now required. Pardon me for taking the wrong turn there... JohnS.

I'm attending my Mum's funeral on Friday, so I won't be bringing the Brit to Sandown until Saturday morning. I'm just grateful that my ME interest provides such a useful and convenient escape from real life! JB

Andrew Thanks for your thoughts. My mother was still telling me what to do even though I'd been out of nappies for 50 years! JB

Here's the Brit ready to go to Sandown park. The organisers are making an exception for me and letting me in before 9.00 to set up. I shall be there both days so I look forward to putting faces to nom-de-plumes! The cab lifts off fairly easily if anyone wants to criticise the semi-scale backhead! JB PS my grateful thanks for all your recent kind messages and posts.

Well, as there's little activity here lately here's another pic! I just need to take 1mm off the bottom of that top front flange to get rid of the gap..... JB

Had a good look at the Brit at the show and a chat with Simplyloco. Super model with great pipwork.
Good show this year best for a few years.

Hi Steve, it was good to meet you on the LBSC Memorial Stand, as well as meeting Terry Howlett again and the ever enthusiastic and bubbly Chris Vine. BTW Bongo is REALLY nice!
Other forum members introduced themselves but forgive me if I can't remember their names. Several Southampton SSME members turned up as well which also made my day.
I enjoyed the experience: Mike Law couldn't have been more helpful on my arrival and during the show. I was wearing a Steward badge, so I was asked lots of questions that I just couldn't answer - including where are the loos? - but there were no rivet counters, no daft/clever questions, and most people just stood and stared at the Brit, taking photos of the motion, and asking how I got the finish on the coupling rods! I might have recruited a few new forum members as well.
I walked around the show but I quickly realised that I have reached the somewhat alarming point in my ME life that I don't need anything!
I look forward to next year when I have been invited back. It should be finished by then! JB

I don't want to criticise, JB, but your Brit backhead looks a little girlish and spartan. This is the backhead of a Black 5 - I'm sure the 70000 class was similar. DJ Attachments:

Any model backhead will need to be simplified compared to full size.
Unless, that is, the driver has scale size fingers!

I appreciate that Alan, But JB is making a glass case model, so it should have a bit more detail on the backhead. DJ

I think this is always a problem, however having seen JB's workmanship, I can tell you that it is top notch. (well and truly linked up!) People will always appreciate this, even if the controls have been simplified.
One problem which often occurs is that one starts work on a model to a well known design, thinking that it is a perfect scale model. Then as work progresses and the full size engine is examined in photos or in the flesh, it turns out that the model is more of an approximation than was first thought. I certainly had this problem with Bongo.
I think the solution is to finish the model to a high standard, but not go overboard with details and remaking everything. You would do better to finish it and then do another, armed with new skills. This time making sure that the details are in the plan and correct before starting!!
John's Brittania will be one of the best LBSC Brits ever!! His boring tool for cutting the internal Acme thread for the reversing screw was magic.
Chris.
