Hi Geoff
I replaced the 3mm regulator rods on my Modelworks Britannia with 5/32", since the originals flexed too much. I didn't think they looked particularly out of scale, and they certainly solved the problem.

Hi all, specially John up above as I made my rods 5/32" and I'm pleased with them. That was the last time I was on this machine. What I am trying to do and not having any success is making the 3/32" half round brass strip for the window frames, I even thought about making them out of 1/16" brass sheet but that sounded like a lot of work,------- keep trying Geoff.

Hi Geoff, One of the old guys, well I was a lot younger then, in the club explained how he did his. He thru drilled a block to hold in the vice the dia of the rod, guess in your case 5/16” towards one end he milled in to remove a bit more than 1/2 way thru the hole, I can’t remember if he did this right at the end or so he left some of the hole to support the rod both side, would think this would be the better idea Set the block in the vice milling cutter set to remove 1/2 the dia of the rod in the milled area, poke the rod in & mill away either pushing the rod or pulling it which ever works best for you.
Cheers Kerrin

Hi Geoff,
Is it not possible to buy the beading in the UK? E J Winter out here sells 5/32" half round brass beading so it must be available commercially.
Good to see you back on the site Geoff.
Cheers
Jim

I've just spoken to Geoff and his problem wasn't sourcing a supply of half-round but problems with trying to bend it. As it has an irregular profile (second moment of inertia) it dosn't stay flat when attempting to form it into a window frame shape. I've suggested he soft-solders two lenghts of half-round material together, so forming it into a round rod. Obviously he'll have to ensure the solder-line remains flat during the whole of the bend process. He should then be able to easily bend it to the desired shape. Once bent, desolder the offcut and hopefully the result is a matching pair of flat bends

I've had similar problems when trying to bend flat or half round in that the 'bend' twists up. My solution was to first anneal the material then start to form the bend and as the twist started I used a clamp to press it back flat before continuing the bend, I also kept annealing the section being bent. It's a slow process but it worked for me.
The photo show how the flat beading was formed round the window on the Britannia's tender where a suitable round rod was used as the former. Once I was happy with the fit the frame was glued inplace. I used a similar technique for the half round beading on the cab windows except they were soldered to the bare metal prior to priming abd painting. That's Geoff reading the paper in the cab.
You can see more details about fitting the window frame in the tender here: modeleng.proboards.com/thread/6349/70036-boadicea?page=84
Hope I haven't rambled on too much.

For my City tender I turned a small bend fixture that had the rad of the beading and the radius I wanted it to follow. This allowed me to pull the beading round and keep it flat. Untitled by Adam Cro, on Flickr Untitled by Adam Cro, on Flickr Adam

That's a very neat idea Adam and simple too. I like it.
