I actually asked a buyer question on ebay, out of curiousity. I won't copy the answer here in full, its not fair to do so, but basically: - If he can find the boiler ticket, it will have one
- Coupling rods and boiler fittings will need to be remade
- Won't go lower than stated price as paid £5000 for it
So basically, its a set of frames (maybe) take your chances on the rest. I feel sorry for him if point 3 is true, but the deed is being replicated. At £1000 I would feel I was gambling a bit that it was salveagable. Mod to post: I replied to him that he might consider cutting his losses, so perhaps Nexuas your dad will get a reply, and dropped a hint that ME is actually a very small community, made smaller by forums such as this..... Regards, John

Although it is always likely to be foolish to assign a value to something, unseen, I dont reckon it is worth anywhere near the asking price. I would have guessed, about half that would be more reasonable.
There is a nice looking Ajax on the same page of Ebay, and that does look as if it is worth sensible money. Running, and with a certificate and history. Not as big as mountaineer, but probably a far safer way to spend ££££.

Dad got a reply of no less than £2900 as he had paid £5000 for it...
I had found the littlelocomotives site and so had got this part of the history, with the details of the boiler maker and repair. The fact that it was a complete and running locomotive should have ensured that all parts he had would be able to be refitted?
So I am a little confused as to why the motion parts will need to be remade, as they are shown in the pictures I recieved from the E-bay seller, if they fitted once why will they not be able to be refitted...
The more I think about it the more dubious I become...
JOHN could you PM me the questions and full answers please.

So I am a little confused as to why the motion parts will need to be remade, as they are shown in the pictures I recieved from the E-bay seller, if they fitted once why will they not be able to be refitted... Because they are *nackered??? And if they are what about the axles and axleboxes. And if they are what about the valves, pistons, valvegear... and so on. It seems to be on its second boiler, the first professional one discarded because a superheater (builder constructed) went?? Hohum, it would need a personal visit (heavy anyway!!) before any money changed hands methinks, never mind the vendor hopes somebody will commit to pay on Ebay... Maybe an opportunity for a companion to Chris Vines book, "How (not) to buy a locomotive" ?? ;D Regards, John

Off topic a bit but here are some more recent photo's for PALMERSTON prior to it's trip to brighton model world. I don't think RUSSELL will be going as we have a first floor stand and the guys were not too keen on carrying it up the stairs...

It would be interesting to know how much the boiler was from Bruce Ellis. A steel boiler that size will be £1000 + so the professionally built and tested copper boiler must have some value even though the certificate has expired. As it has not steamed the next test will be fine.

Well he is determined to pay e-bay as much money for listing it as possible. Now it is on auction only with a £0.00 opening bid, but I assume the reserve is set at £2900 or close to this.
I think it is funny the opening bid was £5.59 I wonder if they guy though he stood a chance at winning it?

Shortly after, up to £620... It seems perhaps he has a chance of unloading it this time. Simonwass, read here www.littlelocomotives.com/Mountaineer.html it's not a Bruce Ellis boiler, they seem to have thrown that because a superheater failed. Perhaps I misunderstand, the web page matches the quality of the previous advert . Ahh well, somebody might get a sort of bargain, if the price does not go much higher!

IF YOU THINK A 5" MOUNTAINEER IS BIG, THEN HAVE A LOOK AT THIS LINK TO A 71/4" VERSION, WHICH LOOKS TO HAVE A VERY HIGH BUILD STANDARD.

I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHERE IT IS NOW AND FOR THAT MATTER ANYOTHER MOUNTAINEERS.

Perhaps I misunderstand, the web page matches the quality of the previous advert . Hi John Lee, Please, call me Simon My name is in the signature box at the bottom of my posts, simonwass is just the profile name I use for all my forums. The forum system is a bit poor, a sig needs to be bigger text for your name with another box below for any extra info. Well, I've read the page a few times and it reads to me that the Bruce Ellis boiler replaced the one with the failed superheater? Anyway, whatever. Looking at the photos though whoever did build the boiler was good at copper boilersmithing, look how little runs there are, and how neat it looks. I've seen some home made boilers built by people who are meticulous, and they are not a patch to the Mountaineer jobby. The whole 'advert' web page is diabolical, why put an update at the bottom when he could simply replace the duff text with new info? I feel a wee wee take of a 'question to seller' coming along ;D

Simon, You may well be right, the whole thing is somewhat confusing! If it has a Bruce Ellis boiler (a direct question?) AND he can find the paperwork it might be worth a look in person. Thats plenty of copper to weigh in.... Although, what is this Bidder1 to Bidder5 thing on ebay?? I assume this a new anonymity thing, but it gives people a chance to bid it up themself, using a spare hotmail or yahoo account, and no visible trail, at least not to other users. Surely not.... Regards, John

It is still the worst Locomotive ad on ebay and he has had 3 goes to get it right.
I like the new name, Mountraineer, or even Mountraineeer....
I have never seen this bidder 1, 2, 3 etc. It looks as though it is set by the seller because it would be very unlikely that 5 consecutive bidders would all be set up like this. Would be a perfect cover for shill bidding.
Chris.

THIS AGAIN IS A LITTLE OFF TOPIC, BUT EBAY HAVE INTRODUCED A NEW SYSTEM TO SAFEGUARD INDIVIDUAL'S ID ON LISTINGS OVER £100.
SEE [ftp]http://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/policies/safeguardmemberids.html[/ftp] FOR MORE INFO!
I AGREE THE ADD DOES LITTLE TO SELL THE LOCO.

So, having followed all this, we now need to trust Ebay to detect shill bidding..... They have done very little in the past to deter fraudsters, recompense people where they were defrauded etc etc. Your only real choice was to look at bidders and their history, a shill bid was easily detected if the same person bidded against another person's goods far too regularly. Now, I am not suggesting this auction is dishonest, it just seems to be some poor chap having paid far too much for a dodgy looking Mountaineer (back on topic) trying to unload it as best he can. But this would be the perfect scenario for a dishonest seller, it did not sell before, so hide the bidders and rely on lack of knowledge and discussion. Which, Andy, you have put on the net; its a small ME community anyway and word gets around. This site adds to it. I just hope that somebody gets a reasonable bargain, and the vendor learns a lesson in life. £5000 for a non runner.. Regards, John
