Hi, I am new to this board, I am in the process of finishing a 3.5" Mountaineer and would be interested in making contact with others who have or are building Moutaineer.
Cheers
Graham.

I don't have a mountaineer, but it is high on my list of models I would like to build/own.
I do have a 3 1/2" RUSSELL from the WHR which must be about the same size as mountaineer, one thing to say is "It's rather heavy" I would consider now how you are going to move it around once it is complete, I have only just got round to making a trolly to store the loco on and move it from the Garage to the car and back without having to lift it...
RUSSELL is a bit light on his feet, but with careful driving will get 12-15 adults moving, and once in charge of the load is a complete master of it, stopping is another matter!!!
I have just started (First metal was cut 29th Dec 2006) another DYD and am building GEORGE, but the plan is to finish it as PALMERSTON as currently running on the FR. Only have frames and a few motion parts on the bench ATM, but progress is good now that I have my VMC mill which arrived just before christmas.
RUSSELL and PALMERSTON(What there is of it) will be on display at Brighton Modelworld exhibition in Feb. (Reading SME)

Cheers

That is RUSSELL fairly soon after recomissioning in august 2006. I can not claim to be responsible for building, as I purchased it complete, but have had to construct a new boiler to enable it to be steamed again. This gave me the confidence to start PALMERSTON from scratch... I have no pictures of PALMERSTON yet, the only castings I have obtained so far are the driving wheels, I have some eccentric straps on order, but I think most other stuff will be fabricated, the cylinder castings are over £100 as they are GM and are fairly small so I will try to make my own as a first attempt. I have not purchased the plans from Reeves' as I have the relavant issues of DY's LLAS in which he describes the construction, I photocopy the plans from this and when they get too oil stained to read just go back indoors and photocopy the page again... Any pictures of your beast???

I am remaking the pipework and adding some detailing. Do you have any details on the show in Brighton.

www.brightonmodelworld.com16-18th feb in Brighton. It covers all aspects of modelling from N guage to 15" as well as boating, aircraft and cars, the website gives a detailed list of exhibitors which will give an idea of the show content... I have never been before, but am looking forward to it - inspite of my disapointment at ALLY PALLY

Hi,
I'm also making a 3.5" Mountaineer. It's one my late father started making and is very early in construction. Main frames are complete and am currently working on the smokebox saddle.
Very impressive photos posted, what does it steam like? I will try and post some pics showing progress soon.
Cheers. Dermot

Shockingly bad picture quality, but they are taken on my phone, this is the frames so far for PALMERSTON.

I too am "building" a Palmerston, but in 5" gauge - it will be heavy. I've got the main frames assembled with horns and hornblocks, and have also built the cylinder/valve chest assembly. The cylinder and valve chest are fabricated, with balanced slide valves as for Don Young's Hunslet. I'm planning on using Don's Stephenson Link valve gear rather than the protypical Allen straight link as I know it works well. The wheels were cast from my own patterns by a local foundry (yes they do still exist) and are currently part machined. Work is on hold at the moment due to getting married and having a more restricted workshop. The milling machine and the Palmerston bits are all in storage for now, but they will be retrieved and moved back on to the active list one day soon! In the meantime I'm making some stationary engines just for fun.

Hi All,
1) Nexuas - Thanks for the info on the Brighton Show.
2) Dermot - Mountaineer does steam freely and is really good loco. I will be modifying mine from coil to leaf spring in the future. Please feel free to contact me if you would like further info or photos.
3) Nexuas & JGB7573, look forward to hearing ans seeing more of your Palmerston developments, you might have tempted me into a new venture myself, but which gauge!

Being a resident I obviously go to Model World. It's a reasonably accurate title in that it covers everything, including a fair bit of ME, but also a lot of non-ME. There's usually a good collection of models and vendors, but don't expect it all to be devoted to our branch of 'modelling'.

Mountaineer,
My father-in-law has a Mountaineer in 3.5" which he finished some years ago. Not as good a finish as yours looks but works which he is thinking of selling. I see you are in Oxfordshire, well so are we if that helps.

Not that I can put my hands on but I'm sure that you could call in and see it in the flesh so to speak.
Give me a call at home to arrange if you want to. Brian H at your place has my home number or my mobile is above.
