Hi all, I have decided to start a build thread for my project. I am in the very early stages of the build having only made a few parts for the tender so far, and since having followed a very thorough and comprehensive thread on here for the same loco,(I`m sure he needs no introduction!!!(greenglade) I now have my second wind. I am going to begin on here with the frames for the tender, something I`ve been avoiding from the start really, as it is a massive job in my opinion, although once done everything else that follows will go straight onto them. That`s the plan anyway. First picture shows the frames roughed out leaving about 1/8" all around to allow the material to `spring` the next step being to re-machine the profile to the finished size and then onto drilling the holes 194 of them!!! Tim.

That's a great start Tim.. I also look forward to following your build...have you decided which prototype to model and which era? so many variants as I have found while researching my own build.
cheers

Cheers Ben, Jim, no Pete I haven't got a clue which era yet!!! Thinking on it though. Thankfully at this stage I don't think it matters yet, and I can just get stuck in lol.

hi IHave built Dons loco as Winsor Lad a few years ago but never got round to steaming it so far. I have a centre cylinder casting going cheep due to a small crack in one flange corner if you happen to be interested. Keep up the good work and I will follow your progress with interest.

Hi TIM--------- might I offer a little bit of hard-won advice??--------- If you know that you will require an item for your build, and you can afford it to-day, then buy it to-day....It can be stored away at no cost etc....However prices will only ever go upwards ---and opportunities fade away very quickly...........Just a thought..

Good advice! I have all the wheel castings and cylinder castings for the V2 already purely because funds allowed, actual work on the engine won't start until the tender is completed by which time I dread to think what the prices will have risen to!

The Chinese say a 1000 miles journey starts with one step , Tim you have started the first step and you can only go closer to the destination as you continue your steps , all advice given above are good ones , the one I will add is patience , measure and check twice before cutting metal , I think many here , surely myself has fallen into rushing and doing the job twice . Good luck and keep us posted .

Evening all, Tender frames completed. And now on to the axle boxes and horns. These I made from scratch out of solid gunmetal and both of which are almost complete now having started them some time ago, just needing a few loose ends tied up. The axle boxes just need their 10ba studs for fixing the covers to, and the horns still need a cosmetic tweak. This is where the ribs meet the top edge. Due to the corner rads on either side of them, they have the appearance of becoming wider where they blend out. So after a bit of playing around I decided to take a cut along the top edge to reduce them down slightly, this I tried out on a spare brass one and hopefully will finish the others over the weekend.(last picture to try to illustrate what I`m rambling on about!!!) Tim.

ahh... fond memories...I did my axle boxes out off Cast Iron but only because I couldn't afford the price of Reeves gunmetal. Mind you I've learnt a lot from the guys on this forum and won't be buying raw materials from such suppliers again. Looking very nice Tim.. top stuff.... A quick question on the axle boxes... they look to be all the same?...I ask as the two intermediates need extra play in their slots for going around tight curves although I can't remember off the top of my head how much ... of course they may already have this but just doesn't show up in the photo's. All looking very good Tim...very neat work indeed..

Yes Pete intermediates are the back 4! While we're on this subject on the drawings it shows a radius relief in the slots for the leading and trailing boxes, but not the intermediates, it just shows straight lines in hidden detail for them. Is that right or do they need relief also?! By the way I've seen your mainframes, And I've seen them over your bogie frames, and I hate you. Lol. They look the dog's !! That was a $€]¥ load of work you've done there Pete. Tim.

Ahh. Cool that answers that.... To be honest I can't remember for sure.... I'll check it out tomorrow and let you know. I'm fairly excited about working on my frames, it's certainly been a long time in the making.... I hope to get the frames erected by the end of March, or at least that's the plan.

Hi Tim
I've just checked the intermediate axle-boxes and yes I have relieved the slots same as the front and trailing boxes, I can't remember what Don said but I do now recall checking the assembled chassis and not being happy with the horizontal movement on the two intermediate axles when compared to the other two and thus I must have decided to do all slots the same, makes sense as if you hit a dip in the track on a tight curve it may jam the axle. Which reminds me did you take note on don's comment of the drawing error in regards to the depth of the intermediate boxes which need a little taking off the rear of each box or from the wheel boss.. he left it up to the builder to decide.. I remember taking it from the boxes myself although can't remember if the drawing was corrected or not.
