Quote}---"The kind of Singles you are thinking of hang about in bars".... Hi guys, now I'm very mindful that we have a goodly Canadian contingent on this forum, and we don't want an International "Incident" on our hands, so I won't post the "I'm a Lumberjack" video by Monty Python which immediately sprang to mind when I read that last bit..................................................... The heck I won't !!..ear it be, me dears >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> www.youtube.com/watch?v=5zey8567bcgI was doing some lecturing and consultancy work in Windsor, Ontario in the mid-nineties. I was there for one week a month for nine months, and after a time, when I felt confident enough with my audience, I showed that video to half a dozen toolmaking Company CEO's. It took quite a while to repair the damage... John

David thanks for that, Mrs J2 was talking about a trip to the IOW so may be on a winner there. Regards Paul And there is Osbourne House and lots more and a bloody good club at Heathfields where they like trains. Drop J2 on the other side of the chain ferry and it will take weeks for her to find you! D PS This might be slightly off thread but then good advice has to be near thread!

Windsor Ontario
Long story hopefully cut short! Visted Detroit in Sep 2001 shortly after 11/9 (( the correct date) just to help the Yanks at least our mob did London on 7/7) along with all the paranoia only the Yanks could muster Anyway, was in Henry Ford Museum and after our accents were heard asked where we came from. The enquirer was a Geography Teacher from Detroit.(this info is important to the story) As Bracknell is not exactly world famous, explained that we lived near Windsor where the Queen had a Castle, about 30 miles from London etc etc. This was all taken in as far as we could tell. So as we were walking away, she ran after us, and the conversation went as follows
'Did you guys say you came from Windsor?'
'Yes'
'Did you have trouble getting through the tunnel?'
'Did you say you are a geography teacher?'
'Yes'
'Then there is no hope for you'

Had a similar experience in the States when asked in all seriousness, if we had washing machines in Australia and that was after it was decided from our Australian accents that we must be Germans and been told 'No'. It's a worry. Jim

Once was told by a cowboy sitting in Detroit airport that we were the first people he had met that had been in England in the morning and Detroit in the afternoon and told him we travelled in an aeroplane. he was impressed. Told him that of course we go to France by train and as he looked confused had to reveal that we had a tunnel for the trains and they carried our cars with us in them. More impressed. Told him the best part was to slide back the sun roof so you could see the fish up above through the windows in the roof of the tunnel. My shin hurt for a week as did my wife's toe!!! D

Hi John just thought I would post this as info and hoping to not re ignite the use of Stainless debate. These are a pair of axles for a ride on drivers trolley I have been making, they are out of 20 mm. stainless steel thought I would use this as I have 6 foot of it and I am intending to use it on my next loco build (ducks behind wall).

Since you're using ball bearings on your riding trolley, I think it's a highly suitable material. I think Julian said he's got a locomotive that has Stainless axles but I don't know if that runs on Bronze or Cast Iron. That's a nice job you've made of those by the way.

Many thanks Roger and Jim, not sure about the bearing material for the Firefly yet but the experience gained from cutting the keyways should be useful. The new lathe made the turning easier and the next job for it is to part off 4 disc brakes from the 4" Aluminium bar (in the front of the 2nd photo), happy days. Regards Paul

A single, inboard disc eh ? ------ good idea...I was wondering what the keyways were for but now I can "Broach" the subject ( I need to get a "grip", don't I ??).......BUT, is Aluminium the right material for the job ??..What friction material will the pads be made from ??

Have you seen the calipers they fit to modern bikes? Here are some on eBay if you don't want to go to the trouble of designing your own.

Mornin Roger !!---- Hey, I thought I was the renegade on this forum ??----------- That's a reference to ( Shh!-- you know who ---- Eeeee-Bay)..It must be catching ?... OK, I won't offer any thoughts on the supplier, trader etc. but that could be a good idea of yours ( Safe with that one as it's NOT a definitive statement or an opinion )......

That's the style of handbrake being retro-fitted to Land Rovers by various owners who want the handbrake to actually work after a days playing. It sounds draedfully small to me though, max disc thickness of 3mm?? I'd be worried about the long term strength of that. The ones I've seen previous by David Hudson?? use a disc at least twice that thickness.

I'd be a little wary of using mountain bike calipers/discs without a bit of testing first. They're brilliant for what they're intended for, don't get me wrong, my bike is gravity based so I wouldn't leave home without 'em But my concern is that they're meant for stopping 75-100 Kgs. Ok, you might get the occasional heavyweight rider, but a train of five passengers may be somewhere in the region of half a tonne in weight including loco and carriage - would they be up to the job? Maths: 5 Passengers at an average weight of 75KG (11st 11 ish!), loco weight of 50kg (0-6-0), carriage of 30kg - 455kg total. That, and the pads are bloody expensive, costs me as much to replace a set of pads on my brakes on the mountain bike as it does to replace them on the average car, and they're only the size of a 50p piece each!
