Mike Looked at that. The whole thing is a compromise really. Whoever built this thing over 50 years ago was a bit ham fisted and I will be glad to be rid of her once I get the cab done and the accumulation test passed. A lick of paint may be!! If I was to raise the rear platform I would have a gap that would need cocovering and other bits, reverser for example would have to be moved. So took the view to let sleeping dogs lie, try to fool the eye with a specially shaped cab side and hop for the best! Thanks anyway for the encouragement. Cheers David

If you look at that example on Station Road Steam, it too has a drooping cab rear. Makes me wonder whether that is by design, after all that one was built by the designer.
Regards,
Dan
p.s. don't forget I've still got your Loctite that needs to get home!

A stupid question, I know, but did the full size Princess Royals have a sloping back end? Do the Clarkson drawings show one? Odd that so many of the models have the same apparent mistake, there must be a reason.

Googling to find pictures - the full size looked straight.

Hi All The drawings in the Wild Swan profile do not droop and photos of the real thing are straight so I am going for straight and as someone mentioned the other day, "I would not admit to droop"! But the Station Road pictures are revealing. Brass screws holding the cab roof on and if you look through the cab, the roof does not fit properly. It was a pig to get the correct curves, three of them according to the original drawings. And what got my attention was the rivet detail. On the sides one can see the screws holding it all together but for the rivets one could drill the holes and glue in some pin heads. I can not yet see the size from the drawings but I might find them with patience. The other detail that would be nice are the wind screens and the sliding windows, a bit fiddely but I think I will try to do a better job than originally planned. One other point is that the SRS one is missing its vacuum pump. These photos need careful study to find the right sort of detail. Well back to work and thanks! Cheers David

Frustrations continue! Have no decent drawings and scaling off the Wild Swan Loco profile. Have now found one side a little higher than the other (on mine) so that is now binned and I think I had the roof too high so drawing a new templete to cut the brass again. It always appears that there is a sort of flatish section on top of a Stanier (Coleman) cab as they tried to fit it all into the loading gauge so that is tomorrows task. Anyway if we were not locked down I would never have found out yet again that I am not an engineer but merely a bloke what likes trains (and a 10 am departure from Kings X to boot!) Well back to the . . . decisions yet again, was that gin or wine? Cheers David, hic! PS Those thousands of little rivets, bought a thousand today and already 'Simpleloco' wants them. I ask you!!

The moment you have all beeen waiting for, a rivetted cab side! Not particularly spectactular but I seem to be learning something! Not quite finished yet but that is how far I got by G & T time yesterday. And of course the rivets are damn small at 3/64s. You may notice some extra holes in the vicinity of a rivet, yes I missed! With only one eye that works, I have difficulty with depth of vision and if the light is not right the hole goes where it should not. Thank god for filler! Don't worry Tim, I bought 1,000 rivets, about 100 on the chunk of brass and another 100 on the floor of my workshop!!! Little bas*****ds get away damn quick! David

Update. We live and learn. The angle piece at the top that takes the roof was too high on this cab side so had to grind it off (correct procedure, Sir, the master instructor?) and redo it down a bit. Looks better now. This is all a search and find process, these people who build from works drawings have my greatest respect. Next challange is to make the block that you wrap the beading around to get the correct radii without the stuff twisting. It has to fit into a slot (oh sh*t, more milling) at the correct radius for the top and bottom corners. And get the correct size of gap. If anyone is up for it, I will slay fifty dragons for one bit of metal slotted the right way. Lego is so much easier!!! Open another Macon Villages please! David PS And thanks for the support from all, is this admiration or joy at seeing the ship sink!!!!

Fixed the side in place just as a test. Got to do the beading but will forego the opening window in the spectacle plate, just too fiddly!!!! IMG_2310 by David Goyder, on Flickr On to the left hand side now!! Cheers David
