I have used one of the quarter turn on off ball valves used for isolating water supply for an air mixing valve with excellent results. I am using a machine mart bench mounted blast cabinet, it has a flat bottom so I put a lump of 4x2 timber under one end so the blast media falls towards the pick up end

If you don’t mind a days work consider making a rotary broach, you can then drill a square or hexagonal hole in the lathe. Hemmingway do a kit for one and it makes small square holes very easy. I have made 1/16” square holes in loco hand wheels with no problem. Must add that I have no connection with Hemmingway except as a customer.

Can I just add that when I started this wonderful hobby, about fifty years ago, I was talked in to making a LBSC Tich, the biggest mistake of my life. It seemed a good idea because the castings were cheaper, boiler was cheaper in materials and within my capabilities etc etc, the only problem is that when you have finished it you are disappointed with it, and sorry to say mine never got finished, it is still in my possession tucked away in the deep dark corner of the workshop, moral of this story, build something worth having at the end, Simplex is certainly that, it is a good club loco for passenger hauling. Very wise words from UUU above about getting your hand in doing buffers etc. Wish you the very best of luck with it and people here are only too pleased to help.

My opinion for what it’s worth is to carry on with the Simplex, have you got the back issues of Model Engineer covering the build, there is also a book on building Simplex published by TEE publishing, it is basically all the build articles in book form, plenty of help and info available as Simplex is a very popular loco, this forum contains a section devoted to Simplex

Regarding the oxy propane nozzles, about 40 years ago I purchased a BOC Dependox oxy propane torch, it had three nozzles and the best way I can describe them is perhaps a piece of 3/16 diameter brass with a jet hole in the centre and then heavily knurled with a straight knurled on the od, this is the lightly pressed into a piece of about 7/16 brass hex bar which is threaded to suit the neck tube. Sorry but I am not able to upload photos but if anyone wants a pic I will email one to you.

Dave yes I am a member, living up in North Hampshire, nearest track to me for 2 1/2 is the superb Andover club site, unfortunately not a member yet , was going to join a couple of years ago but the big C got in the way and now I am getting out and about again along comes this wretched Covid 19. I understand that Reading also have a 2 1/2 gauge track, when we are allowed out again I must investigate. I am building a Toby, chassis nearly done.

Welcome to the forum Dave, not cheating to buy a boiler, if you ever sell the loco a commercial boiler would make it more desirable. The 2 1/2 gauge crab is a lovely loco, are you a member of the 2 1/2 gauge society?

Thanks for the heads up Norman, +1 for best wishes to Don in these rather strange times, and to all forum members please keep yourself and your loved ones safe while the world is fighting this virus.

Andyhigham, yes it’s not cheap but seems to be used a lot by tree surgeons etc because of all the toxins they are inhaling, being in close proximity to the exhaust of chainsaws etc. Aspen is supposed to burn a lot cleaner and be better for your health. I have not tried any of it yet, nobody near me stocks it.

Got a motorbike dealer over the road from us and was chatting to the owner the other day, the conversation got round to classic bikes only ridden in the summer and the problems of modern petrol, his advice was to empty the tank and then put some of this Aspen petrol in for a last run and leave it in all winter.

I thought it was five foot but with the flanges on the outside, when flanges were moved inside it became four foot eight and a half. Think I might go and have a nice single malt now.

Never had any trouble with Mitutoyo digital callipers but make sure you buy a genuine one, lots of cheap and nasty copies out there. I have also purchased a couple of the Aldi and Lidl digital callipers, they are about ten quid each and come with a couple of years warranty, so keep your receipt, They are not as silky smooth as Mitutoyo but perfectly ok for a model engineering environment.

Roger I have the same problem with noise as you do, the workshop is six feet away from the neighbours wall, things are ok during the day as we have a tyre fitting place opposite and they make a bit of noise but my problem has been the workshop compressor especially if I forget to turn it off at night, there is a slight leak somewhere in my pipe work and the damn thing starts up a couple of times in the night as the pressure drops. I have just invested in a Bambi silent compressor and this has solved the problem, the radio is now louder than the compressor is, still have to be careful not to do any hammering in the evenings though.

UUU, thanks for your details of pipes, cones and nuts, I shall copy them out and pin on the workshop wall.

Pretty certain the pump is of LBSCs design, I think it appeared in Shop Shed and Road book. GLR Kennions do castings for a very similar design

There were a couple of clubs in the north of Cornwall but may have closed down, I think that there may be a few model engineers around Barnstable and South Molton
