Some progress photos from the weekend. All of the side angles inside and outside and now in place and all that is left is the long task of rubbing back all the heads to get it all flush (invisible). Untitled by Adam Cro, on Flickr [Snip] That's exceedingly neat work Adam. What species of rivetter did you use? (Not hard to guess why I'm asking!) Gary

Thanks Gary, I have riveting, I'm too impatient to set things up how I probably should to do the job right but on these I found my little toggle press was perfect. It is similar to this one and I made a snap to take the 3/64" rivet head and the end of the press is flat to squeeze the rivet in flat to a slightly countersunk hole. The idea was driven from Rogers rivet squeezer but I'm not one for taking time to make impressive tooling so this was all I had to hand. I'll get a photo when in the workshop later on for you. Loving the work on the bunker, keep it up! Adam

Hi Adam,
I'm Brunswick Green with envy---LoL !!....Beautiful job, lovely .....
Have you approached the Great Western Society for archive details ??......they were very helpful with my Great Bear research...For instance I now have copies of it's full operational history from the moment it came onto the stock list untill it was re-built as a Castle......This includes the dates of visits to Swindon for various work and/or mods etc..

Thanks Alan, thought it would be up your street. No I've not yet, I had most of what I need and a friend has just sent me a great collection of detail photos so I've hit the jackpot there! The main focus of this project is actually for Dad's Bday but not next year, in 8 years when he hits 70! He loves what I do in the detail but if it were his choice he would build a working loco with some improved areas as he does with his 2 1/2" so my aim here is detail to a degree but not going overboard as I may have done on my own loco (partly due to time and inclination) but knowing me I'll probably go all out anyway! Things like, water scoop or not.... Adam

WRT tooling, I'm afraid I'm the same- spending time making tools always feels so unproductive unless there is no other way... if it's available I'd buy every time if I could. Is that a link though, where you refer above to your little toggle press for riveting? It is blank, so it goes nowhere -Gary

Hello Adam, I know it's early days yet but have you given any thought to the livery ??.........Just to be totally outrageous you could go for the very short-termed, scandalous SVR Black !!
To be completely accurate }--- SVR Half-Black

Looking great Adam. Such a warning about the Drawings, sometimes I have another go at the BULLDOG... Then revert to my other Projects most of which are these days via the drawing board. Even the simple models leave out design ideas on just how to put them together especially after painting.

SVR 'Half Black'? Please tell! An April 1st spoof printed in Steam Railway in days before the net. There was outrage in the letters page and a certain Mr Nula Seer came in for a lot of stick. One side was painted black whilst the loco was being stripped for overhaul at the Severn Valley.

Found on RMWeb - you can see the green on the back! Ah-- that brings back some happy memories !!..........Young Alan is in there--somewhere... By the way, Mr. Nula Seer was the then SVR Chief Engineer Alun Rees........spelt backwards !! I've lifted this from Wikipedia}---- During its restoration in 1984, the locomotive was the subject of a 'spoof' by Steam Railway magazine. The engine was being restored on the Severn Valley Railway and workshops foreman Alun Rees suggested to editor David Wilcock to repaint the driver's side of the locomotive in BR lined black as 3717. This took place, and several pictures of the engine as 3717 were taken on shed at Bridgnorth and in the Bridgnorth yard. It was almost discovered by John Coiley when he visited the railway that year, but Rees had the engine parked with its driver's side along the workshop's wall so it couldn't be seen. The images were released in 1985 with the note that 'proposals for a double chimney and high sided tender were narrowly defeated...' This subsequently upset many GWR enthusiasts; however, the engine never ran in this livery, either in service or in preservation Ooopppsssssss........drifting off piste again....

Hi Alan,
I don't know how many times you have mentioned the Steam Railway magazine spoof, but it has been quite a lot.
And perhaps we don't need to hear it all again.
From what I understand, and is more pertinent to Adam's work is that City of Truro since whenever - probably since when it went to York Museum in the 1930's has a peculiar hybrid tender that doesn't match any of the GWR tender diagrams.
Cheers, Julian
