Well the parts box for the Rob Roy has once again been opened. Thinking on the small problem I have created I am going to make all the linkages that go to the steam chest to see what clearances I have and how thick I will need to make a spacer so I did manage to make a couple of valve spindles out of stainless steel. While I was running some wet and dry over the outer diameter as they were a very close tight fit the switch on my lathe which is one month out of guarantee broke I did manage to get the two rods made. A phone call to the lathe supplier and a new switch is now on it's way to me FOC, they were very helpful and no ifs or buts from them just a simple "sorry it happened and one is on the way" The rest of the afternoon was running to the post office and doctors for an appointment for the wife.
Sorry no photos forgot to take any besides who want to see two pieces of stainless rod threaded at both ends and about 2 9/16" long

You did remember to put different thread pitch on each end of the valve rod 32tpi and 40tpi? It then provides a means of micro adjusting the valve position by turning the rod, 0.0625" per turn. Also spend some time working out the correct lead angle on the valve eccentrics and then pin them in position. The late Don Ashton was very dismissive of Martin Evans use of grub screws for this. There is only one correct position of the eccentrics and it is best to set it while the axle is out of the loco. Believe me, trying to do it in situ will only result in best guess and could well be several degrees out. Pete

After a morning of starting to put the garden to bed for the winter I managed a quick shed time and produced the two crosshead gudgeon pins made these were something that I could do in the short time I had. I will get back to sorting out the cylinders. DSCF2888 by Dalboy, on Flickr

yet another simple job today got the plain cylinder covers turned need to drill for the holes but I will wait until after the other end have been turned and machined. At least I am getting back onto the cylinder and valve block assembly.

Both the cylinder covers turned just need to drill and thread for the piston rod gland and mill the boss to the correct size. I nearly had a heart attack then realised that I had not turned one of them too small but had turned it 30+ thou oversize so that was remounted and turned down to 1.562" which was 0.0005 under size so was not to worried. I still need to complete the cylinders by milling the steam ways and a little tidying up. I am also doing some work in the garden which is my morning thing, Picked and froze some sprouts for the wife I hate the things. I am very slow at turning and milling but I am sure I will speed up with a lot more practice. DSCF2899 by Dalboy, on Flickr

Being slow at turning and milling is still quicker than doing it fast, twice!
If your machining turns out like your woodwork I'm sure it will be just grand.

I don't mean fast as in rush things a bit like when I turn a wooden bowl it use to take all day to make one but now I can do one in a couple of hours. I would rather do something twice if it is wrong the amount of times I have throw parts away when making the wooden models I would rather do that than try to rescue something and make it worse.
Enjoying every minute so far but have to keep stopping throughout the day due to arthritis in my spine. I do have a stool in the workshop which I can use when milling but lathe work I need to stand.

The little 2-6-0 in this picture was the first engine that I designed myself and I used the gizzards from Rob Roy in it. It went like the clappers, a great little engine. I had no problems with Marten Evans design so your engine should be just as good as mine was. Regards , Barry

That has to be the old wooden elevated track at West Ryde. Very nostalgic.

All the main machining on the cylinder covers done today only need to drill the bolt holes to hold them to the cylinders as well as drill and tap the gland holes only to find I don't have a 3/8" X 32 tap and die set so ordered these today.
The good new however I was told to order my Christmas presents so more tools ordered

Managed to escape from the bathroom decorating for a morning, the taps and dies for the gland nut on the cylinder cover arrived the other day so was able to drill and tap the cover and make the gland nuts which they say make 4 holes(in the book of words) but I went for six instead. I did have a little slip with the cutter and slight damage to one of the covers not enough to worry about as it looks worse than it is in the photo DSCF2901 by Dalboy, on Flickr DSCF2906 by Dalboy, on Flickr
