Amazing, looks like you blokes have run barefoot through the 1200 mb of extra storage already. Apart from 2mb.
A couple of points;
Attachments need to be resized to a reasonable size before posting.
The preferred method of posting pics (as I have mentioned in the past) is via Photobucket, or similar, with the 'insert image' rather than using attachments. This means you can post as many pics as you like without impacting our storeage.
Now there are a couple of courses that we can take;
a. Increase the storage yet again. This will mean that the hat will have to be taken around again sooner than expected (probably June this year) AND will only be a stopgap anyway, unless some of you can modify/moderate your posting habits.
b. Leave it as it is and just rely on third party hosting.
c. Remove attachments posted before ??/??/??
Comments please - I am happy to go with whatever is favoured by the majority

Well, our payment for extra storage is still coming out every month and I can't see that we are anywhere near the limit - I'll look into it. Thanks Tel. It looks like others are still able to upload theirs so I have no idea why mine won't. Roger

Comments please - I am happy to go with whatever is favoured by the majority I have not problem with hosting the pictures elsewhere so long as they can be linked here. I've just uploaded my photos to Flickr because they give you 1TB free! Sadly the links don't work when you paste them into the dialog box that you get when you insert a picture. Here's such a link...... www.flickr.com/photos/113997154@N02/11867376293/ try it and you'll see that it's a valid picture link.... The following is how it looks when you try to use it as a picture. Maybe you can shine some light on why that doesn't work. Roger

Tel,
I fully agree that 'Attachments need to be resized to a reasonable size before posting'. A 100Kb picture gives a decent picture for viewing on a normal size PC screen. The 1200mb allowance would probably give much more viewing pleasure if split between 12000 x 100kb pictures rather than 600 x 2mb pictures (hope I've got the maths right there). I hope we can continue to post direct to the site because on my travels abroad I often find hosting sites blocked or the connection too slow to download / upload pictures.

I had suggested before to limit the size of images but it appears that we are putting large size images which takes a lot of data , if we reduce the size of pictures to 72 resolution or limit the size say to 0.2 MB ,we will save lot of data , secondly images that are older than 5 years may be deleted ( some will not agree with this ) also will provide more space . Just couple of ideas for Tel . Any comments from others will help .

Hi guys I have been doing my pictures as Tel states above but I have never resized them as I assumed since they are hosted elsewhere it didn't matter about size? Computers are like a foreign language to me but now reading some of the posts here I'm getting a little concerned that I'm wasting forum space.... Is this correct or is it as Tel has said and I can post as many pictures as I like when using the 'insert image' tab as I do? Kind Regards Pete

That is correct Pete, externally hosted pic do not impinge on our storage at all.
Photo bucket, as I said before, is a good choice (despite some confusion when they changed their system) I have around 300 pics stored in my FREE account and I have not reached 1% of my capacity yet.

It links to the picture embedded in a flickr page, surrounded by border, other thumbnails, and all sorts of mess. Perhaps the photobucket and dropbox links point to a clean copy of the picture alone. I may have to switch to them anyway. Cheers, Roger

Ok, I've junked Flickr, there's no way to get a clean link to the photos. So it's Photobucket from here on in. Thanks to everyone who's helped. Roger

Have you tried the AHA (see above), yu may have missed as we were exhanging posts? No, I missed that. I've junked Flickr and switched to Photobucket, but I might just go back round the loop again armed with what you've discovered because they have a much more generous space limit. I'll try the link thing out first though in case is doesn't work. Cheers, Roger

Thanks Tel.... I'd hate to think that I was causing this problem for the forum as I do post a lot of pictures and some seem to come out fairly large.. Pete

These are some rods I made for someone going to make two Paddington chassis into an articulated Beyer Garratt type loco. This is how I post photos hosted on Flickr: Open Flickr in a separate tab click on the photo you want from your photostream right click on it and a small box opens- I then click on the "medium 500" This opens a page where there is a line saying "download the medium 500 version of this photo" Right click on this and then click on "copy shortcut" Back in the MECH tab in your post click the insert image icon where it says "url" just right click and paste Does this work for you?

Thanks, I've done a similar thing but think I've ended up with the full size image. I'll try it your way on future posts. The main thing is that now I have a huge amount of free space (1TB) and a way to post them here without costing the site money on hosting so all's well. I've swapped the attachments I'd posted for Flickr links now so that will have released a few MBytes for others to use.
Fabulous work there, by the way.

OR-------try TINYPICS..........http://tinypic.com/ Hmmm.... they have a file size limit of 500MB which is a bit mean. Flickr allow any size by the look of it, mine are all 2MB+ and you get 1TB free space. I had a look at others but they only seem to give about 2GB free which is ok for a while but a pain when it runs out.
