Hi just tried uploading a photo but got the 'forum limit ' message. Is this a temporary issue or are we encouraged to use 3rd party hosting sites? I'd rather not do the latter - I've seen the issues this creates on other sites when the third party sites start charging and the images become unavailable.

Your fears are well-founded. The limit seems to be permanent, and many of us have hit issues with changes to the third party hosting sites.

I've looked at this problem a few times the only real way is to pay for the increased limit or delete stuff and that's not going to happen. Cheers Jason

So I still can't add a photo to my post, but other threads appear to be able to still add photos - do different threads have different rules? A forum you can't post photos on isn't going to survive for long.

A forum you can't post photos on isn't going to survive for long. Methinks you do not understand... You need to use, and perhaps pay for, a hosting site to post your photos on here. BTW this forum has been going for as long as I can remember! John

Hi summerset, try registering to one of the free host sites, you'll then be able to post your pictures here by copy/pasting the link to your picture. As Wilf said many of us have had issues with hosting sites which then wanted to charge. Many of us were stung by Photobucket, some of us then migrated to Imgur which so far has remained a free hosting site.
Regards
Pete

Ok, i wasn't aware that an external hosting site now has to be used - previously i have uploaded photos directly to this site without any problem. My concern is that posting to external hosting sites leaves us hostage to those site, and if they either start charging, or disappear, then all of the useful reference information is lost - i've seen this on other forums where older threads no longer have images on them because the third part hosting sites are no longer available.
I appreciate the issue about storage costs for hosting the site, but this can be addressed to some extent by limiting image sizes to less than 100kB, which still display adequately, but reduce storage required. i've also heard that some sites automatically reduce uploaded image sizes to get round this. I only offer this as a suggestion, this is a great site and it would be a shame if the shared wisdom wasn't available to future generations.

Hi, I waned to upload a photo of my Smokebox but got the same error? Any thoughts? You need to host the pictures using a third party and link to them in your message. There's details in the Posting Photos thread pinned to the top of General Chat. Ian

Is there a way to embed the photo from your hosting site into the post so they don't have to click the link? Someone in my thread was saying Photobucket wants them to make an account to view my images.

Connor Hi Connor You need to use a hosting site, some are still free such as Imgur and Flickr, I'm sure there may be others out there too. Regards Pete

David, it really couldn't be easier. Just upload your photos to your Imgur account and then when you click on one of them you get a box like this comes up. Click "Copy" against the BBCode box and paste it into your message. Ian

I have Photobucket but only get access to one link.
Looks like I'm making an account with a third site now to see if Imgur will work...

Have a look back on your 3D printing thread - I've managed to embed one of your Photobucket images - I'll try again here: Tada! Wilf

For Imgur, I don't use the links, they just don't work for me. I find it much easier to just 'right click' the image and choose 'copy image address'. Then when writing my post I open the image tab and 'ctrl+v' to paste the address. I also add an 'l' ( l for large) before the '.' to select the 'large' size image. If you don't do this the image can be very large.

Imgur works! Your trick to make the picture smaller is just brilliant, thanks.
Connor
Edit: The technique you use also works with Photobucket!
