Hello all---------- just an up-date on progress during the last few days............. The two running boards have now had their second de-paint, de-grease scrub and air-blast dry so now it's down to general fettling ( usual stuff found on an "amateur" build such as sharp edges, holes not de-burred, rivet heads lop-sided etc..).......... ............ I've also re-painted the drivers bogie truck that I bought last year......... The two side panels were originally finished in Midland Maroon so I re-painted one in Brunswick Green, finished the angle irons and rear of the panels in Matt Black and applied 7.25"gauge LMS and GWR transfers as appropiate............................................... ................................... .................................

As a link between this thread and another one. Here's a repeat of a photo posted by Julian earlier, showing a loco with safety valve easing gear! Wilf

OK, a bit more work yesterday on the NCB Simplex..I practice what I preach and so this loco will be having TWO brand new No.4 injectors fitted along with fresh pipes, nuts, Olives and strainers....I have modified the standard Simplex rear water container so that just the original centre section will now sit between the rear frames ( Instead of sitting ON them as originally designed. )....and the injectors will both receive their water from this "Reservoir"......which in turn is being fed (via an On-Off Ball valve just in front of the Driver ) from the main water container fitted at the rear of the driving truck.....Thus when I turn the water valve to "ON" both injectors receive clean, cold water at the same time.....The Steam valves remain in the same position on the Manifold but the two overhauled Clacks are being re-positioned from the bottom of the Backhead ( Doorplate if you will !! LoL !!)... to just before the Smokebox....... The handpump which is mounted in the side-tank stays where it is and now both tanks will be supplying water to the Handpump only.......................... ..................................................................................................................................................................................................... which means that this pump is up for sale......Have a look in the Personal-For Sale Thread for details..

That's a beast of a pump, not much elegance in that design!
Maybe you could use it to supply cooling water to a jacket round the injector... ok, perhaps not...

Oh Yea !----Oh Yea !......... More recent work on Simplex }--- When I received the loco both rear steps had taken a nasty knock each at some time and, as they were mounted only on the 1/4 x 1/4 Brass angle sole plate, had ripped and bent it in that local area..........Some nifty work with a cold chisel, Dremel and disc soon had the offending parts removed...A trim-up with some Warding files and we were ready to insert a replacement piece of angle............................................................. ........... I intend to soft-solder initially then place a few rivets to give some strength to the new piece AND at the same time add a support bracket between the rear of the steps and the mainframes.....This will involve slightly re-positioning the TWO injectors ( Take note, Oh ye of little faith !!)............................................... .......................... The repaired and re-painted steps are positioned at the join.......................I've also had both Cylinder Claddings off, washed, de-painted and re-designed such that they can now be removed without having to remove the Cylinder drain cocks at the same time...All 4 valves were removed, stripped, washed and visually checked..... One or two needed the taper plug re-seating and ALL needed the operating arms secured with soft solder, whilst the drain hole was opened up and 4 drills ordered off E-Bay to act as position stops when re-fitting the operating linkage....All valves are re-fitted with thin washers and Loctite for extra strength.....The main cross-shaft was bent so was removed, straightened and re-fitted..............The insides of the Mainframes have had a 3rd wash-down with Paraffin and dried off........................ ........ ............................ Double what you see in the photos to allow for both sides....

Alan, your simplex is looking amazing, as good as it gets for a simplex. I cannot wait to see the final product. Since its a freelance design, I find that NCBfying it is a great option. I'm still undecided whether to stick a BR logo on or a NCB one. I ought to put black lining on to contrast the red, much like you have done but in reverse. Keep it up, i am following avidly! Marc

It's 2 Injectors for me, as per usual..

What the images don't show is that it's B****g cold in the workshop and I'm wearing double EVERYTHING to keep warm....Just like when we were doing Winter maintenance at the SVR only this time the Locos. are a bit smaller....I'll send you a PM in a day or two with some photos you might find of interest...........

cheers Alan! Since i'm in Switzerland, the workshop temp is around 10°C . I do get scared for my machinery and simplex, but so long as it doesn't get any lower its fine, cold in CH is very dry so things dont rust indoors.... luckily Marc

I was reading just now about the various mods you are doing to the Simplex and read where you have modified your cylinder cladding so that you do not have to remove the drain cocks. I have realised that I have effectively locked my cladding on because I only notched it to clear the cocks. I am off out into workshop now to marl out and redrill the 10BA threads in the cylinder casting.
So pleased I read this, just a simple thing but easily missed. (As I did)
Thanks Alan Donald

I am hoping that my simplex will be my workhorse when I go back to UK. It was built in 1991, but has an Alec Farmer boiler so hopefully just last a long while. I admit at first I was not fond of the looks, but as soon as I get some lining on, re-paint my smokebox and getting pulling passengers I'm sure I'll fall more in love! Alan, I sent you a PM, have you received it? Cheers Marc

Alan.
Finished in workshop today and both cylinders and cladding modified. What an easy job to remove cladding now. Thanks very much, yes the forum has an amazing spread of knowledge from which to learn.

I wasn't sure since you i didn't know if your reference to a pm on this threas meant that you had read it or not. Unfortunately I haven't got any brushes yet, infact its one of the items on the list..... switzerland my sound cool ( and cold!) but it is really hard to find supplies and goodies for the locos. I'll be driving to a potential new club/track in march.. only down side is its 2h30 mins away. Hopefully thought with a bit more driving pratice and confidence i'll be be heading back to that miniature loco wonder land.
Cheers Marc

Hi Guys---------- A bit more progress..Several more sessions of rubbing down plus a trip to Halfords for another tin of U-Pol Acid Etch8 grey primer and the two running boards are now fully painted in Satin Black......I'm waiting on a delivery of 5/16" diameter steel bar to make the extra support brackets behind the cab steps....( Oddly enough there was nothing near that size in my stock or scrap bins !!)..Of course what I can't show is all those bolts trimmed to size, the preparations and alterations etc, etc ..Surprising what a lick of paint on the chassis does for your enthusiasm as well......More later...PS}--- Following a rather scary Health Check recently I have now been doing 1 hour a day "Power-Walking" for the last week, and it's really enjoyable---once the pain "Barrier" is passed.......At 65 I'm well pleased with that !! >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
