Brian--- your opinion is as valued to me as any other contributor on this forum ( Big smiley !!)---- A closer look at the first two images will show just where the oil feed connects to the bottom of live steam T--piece.... I'm not sure if that's a combined clack valve in that extended body or what ??-- I'll have to remove it and see, plus have a look at the drawings as well......More on that one later... Hello Norman, I feel sorry for those poor miners being peppered with shale---- that must have really hurt ??...I've shown this image before but is this the type of Red you had in mind ?? >>>>>>>>>>>>>

Hi All Re Dad? It was a lucky accident. They found something else wrong- and he was treated early. As for the miners- they all died. No penicillin or very little and it had to be injected intravenously. The mortality rate from pretty grim. The other Goldstar- my mate, had mastoiditis after a drunken pilot finally fired up a Merlin with the 'gate' open. The necessary penicillin went to some huskies in Antarctica! Enough of a rant.
I would guess that the red on your photo is somewhat bright, my recollections were duller colours. I used to go past Blaydon engine sheds on my way first to school and then into work and it was a bit like Dante's inferno of dirt, grease and filth. Shiny black anywhere? No way! Again, I recall the Carlisle Newcastle train hitting a stalled van on a crossing. It was almost pitch dark, a gang of us rolled the van over the embankment out of the way of the express due behind. We found the footplate had been torn off and on the line. I can assure you that there was dirt, grease, soot ,, filth and whatever but no glossy black paint.
It might be romantic now but it wasn't then.
Happy days? Well, not as some imagine
Norman

Does anybody have a lsit of the NCB Colliery/ Area with railways? I've got to find a situable one for my loco.... yes you've guessed. A second NCB simplex, that way once I'm back in Blighty hopefully we will have ncb simplex double headers ! I still think I am going to go with yellow writing though. Cheers Marc

Cheers Marc Hi Marc, I joined NCB in 1977 and whilst things like Land Rovers had a standard NCB livery by that time, mainly dark blue with yellow writing, I don't recall seeing locos in anything other than green, as Julian has already said. Not in South Wales anyway. This set of photos is likely to be representative across the UK - www.flickr.com/photos/60790501@N04/sets/72157627209346262/Also have in mind that the outline of a Simplex is unusual for a colliery loco so I would just try and get something that captures the atmosphere of the time, and that was certainly not gleaming paintwork. A colliery loco would be shunting trucks in and around the washery area where coal dust would be blowing all over the place as the wagons were filled from chutes in the washery building above the tracks. It was not a clean environment at all, in fact it was pretty filthy!.

Unfortunately I can't change the loco, a simplex is what I have and I do not want to change. Granted, walscherts gear hardly appears on tank locos. However, very much like that GWR speedy above, I believe some mainline locos were bought so the NCB, so I guess it was possible. I think the less I do to it the more it will look NCB like. I'm still debating whether I should paint the buffer beams red or to leave them black? What's your opinion on this? Cheers Marc

Marc Maybe when you get to the UK you should visit Newcastle. Actually, there is a Mining Institute next to the Central Station. Neville Hall, Westgate Road. Again, the Discovery Museum in Blandford Street is worth a visit. Turbinia is in there.
We are pretty well off for things. Wylam was the home of George Stephenson. Rothbury for Lord Armstrong of Armstrong Whitworth. Beamish is not far away.
Cheers Norman

I really hope I do manage to get in to Durham, the north-east has loads of railways pilgrammages! Hopefully I'll find a good m.e club and I become a volunteer at the Tanfield or a different nearby railway! In the meantime though, I think I will just get some NCB decals and maybe paint the bufferbeam. I still have a year until I go to uni, so I am looking for a quicker re-dress of my loco, just somethings to add to the overall look. Still don't know about the bufferbeams though Marc

You should also be aware that the coal industry was private up to 1947. I very much doubt that the colour and livery of the locos was topmost in the mind of the average colliery manager so I wouldn't lose too much sleep worrying what colour this bit was or another. As demonstrated by the Aberfan disaster in 1966, there was a bit of a free for all attitude shall we say.

Hi matey !!----------- a quickie look-alike conversion for a Simplex would be to change to a saddle-tank perhaps ??
I've seen one done and it's visually acceptable......
How about converting to an 0-4-2T ??

I've seen a maroon coloured saddle tank Simplex, and it looked very good, better than the standard version in my opinion!

www.stationroadsteam.com/stock%20pages/2925/index.htmAnd here is one. I like the look, maybe I mod I might look to do in the future. My favourite all time is Embsay's NCB loco no 140 , with Keighley's Nunlow also very nice to the eye. If ever I dive into 3" 1/2, I would defintely think about converting a rob roy into one of these locos. For now though, I think red buffer beams with yellow NCB logos and no 88 will be very satisfying. I will just have to clean it less to roughen it a bit! Marc

Chuck some dust on (keep the running gear clean mind) and you are getting there. That saddle tank version looks spot on.

Indeed... so disappointed Hagley is gone, the forum wont be the same without him. Back to my NCB simplex, I broke a draincock after a de-railment, so now it sounds like a dirty colliery loco. The new livery has been ordered though, its going to be NCB no 88 of Area No 4 ( north east) with yellow writing. Since he's gone, I guess I will hijack this thread and post photos as I progress into my NCBisation.
