Yes David, I had seen that article by the editor of one of the steam mags as well. I suppose there is a general interest in nostalgia that attracts viewers to these programmes. Unfortunately the BBC and others are still fixated with redesigning houses/ gardens etc and bargain attic car boot sales etc. Altho' I'm biased, I've never seen a programme about our hobby, and wouldn't that be a fascinating thing for non model engineers to see a glimpse of castings, stock material etc being machined and worked and assembled into a live steam loco for instance. Look at the interest there was in Fred Dibnah's projects, although his character drew people to the programme initially, so many people remarked to me how interesting they found his projects.

I find Polly very good as well, and Reeves. Never dealt with Blackgates for the simple reason that their website doesn't show enough.

I thought they were great pictures too, and especially the ones without humans in, so realistic.

Hi David,
Good luck with all that you've taken on. By your demeanour on this forum you're obviously prepared to listen to what people want, always a good thing. I always imagined ME etc. to emanate from the heart of industrial England so quite refreshing to see that you actually bide in Thurso! Cheers,
Ian.

Thanks Andy, I'll have a look for it next time I'm there. Yes the cylinders look very inclined and massive.
Cheers,
Ian.

As Simon mentioned Big Bertha, anybody ever made or seen a model of her, No. 58100, 0-10-0 used as the Lickey Banker ?

Many thanks Paul and Andy for letting us see the pics, she looks superb and as Alan says she must be efficient to be pulling a load like that. I seem to remember the real ones were fitted with special brake shoes made by Ferodo I think, to save them running away on the Mendips. Thanks again.

I'm surprised that it wasn't more popular. I looked into the feasibility of making one in the early '80s, as I was brought up next to the S&D at Blandford and occasionally the 7Fs came down as far as there on pigeon specials. I didn't know there was a series in M.E. later on as I had cancelled it by then. I seem to recall thinking that a Fowler tender from the 4F would have been the easiest part of the project. Any chance of seeing a photo, Paul ?
Cheers,
Ian.

Hi Steve, I've just ordered 3 1/2" gauge nameplates, numberplates, smokebox numberplate & shedcode for a GWR Hall from www.steamdays.co.uk The price was £57 including p&p. Very quick response too. Cheers, Ian. P.S. They only recently seem to have offered this service.

Well, as it is snowing here just now, and as I'm a self-employed gardener, and as I have just been away to the Lakes for a few days with SWMBO, therefore brownie points are currently in credit , I'm thinking about the rest of the day in the shed. The only time I've achieved a reasonable output was a couple of months ago when I was doing the brake gear for a tender, about 48 individual components, and I just wanted to get it over with ! I recognise the bit about the sore back Al, and the re-doing as well.
Cheers,
Ian.

Having seen examples of the standard of your work JB, [ lifting arm etc. ] why not leave the Brit unpainted. It would be a shame to cover a finish like that up with paint, and I'm sure your standard of finish will be equally as good on platework and all the visible stuff etc.

Fascinating and beautifully made documentary. Interesting gadget for adjusting safety valves, often wondered how that was done on full size locos.

But isn't that complete models that wealthy people would buy as an investment rather than a part built or restoration project that they probably wouldn't have the skills to finish ? Anyway, money can't buy you the satisfaction of having built something with your own hands and brain.

Any advice and detail on this operation would be most welcome by me as well. Of all the procedures involved in building a loco I personally found the coupling rods the most awkward things to get right. Straight bits , nae bother, round bits nae bother, but round bits on the end of straight bits always give me a problem.

Interesting take on it Andy, I had noticed the turn over with Mike as well, and I was teasing a retired farmer pal of mine [ from Aberdeenshire ] a few weeks ago when HBOS got into difficulties, about buying more vintage tractors, and he said that he'd " bocht fower last wik " I phoned him a week later to find out what they were and he was very uncommunicative, so I said " Is your wife listening ?" He said.." Aye..." so I changed the subject !! Other halves don't seem to understand the investment potential of dirty old machinery....

Hi John, To add to what JB has said, the compressor that I have used with the Kite is 1.5 HP and it only came on now and again set at about 25-30psi. I'm sure Chris will have some advice to offer, and if you haven't got his book then do so as it is a must !!! Usual disclaimer.
Regards,
Ian.
