I suppose a clack valve attached to the main dome would work............To be honest I haven't spoken to my "Tame" Inspector yet so I think that ought to be the first Port-of-Call before deciding on anything else.................... The Loco ( and its' boiler ) are known to the club and I believe it to be a very early example of Simplex.......be a pity to spoil what might be a unique loco...................Meanwhile, I've used this lovely weather to do some outdoor work and have removed the cladding and inspected the lagging....This looks to be of an early open asbestos type so it's all coming off and being replaced by modern equivalents >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

on the Brighton Line painted white coal was reserved for royalty or the dead! -------------------- with all that Royal In-Breeding years ago what's the difference ??------------That cab arch does need some solder in-fill and the windows need glazing.........I was cracking on with the boiler cladding but have come to an unexpected halt as SWMBO has now developed SCIATICA in her left leg and needs constant monitoring during the next 2 or 3 weeks !!----------------------- It's looking like we'll be kissing Rote 66 good-bye as well !!

---------- but now I'm wondering if Gloss black for the Cab, tanks and boiler with satin for cab roof, tank tops, running boards, smokebox might be more appropriate ?? (Wheels are already gloss with the mainframes in satin )............What do YOU think ??----------

i think that where the NCB is concerned you can do anything you like! whatever paint was at hand was used! the SR always painted smokeboxes matt back. certain depots then covered the smokeboxes with steam oil to produce a 'gloss' finish such as the Isle of Wight depots! i was taught this trick many years ago by an old IW railwayman. i just about remember NCB steam at Mountain Ash when at Uni. gosh that's a long time ago! to see steam still in use in the mid 1980s other than preserved was quite a thing! cheers, julian

NCB in gloss...there's an unlikely story....grime would be more appropriate!

Hi guys------- yes, you're both right of course !!...I was just having a re-lapse ?, pro-lapse ?--- whatever -lapse....I'll stay with the satin and maybe "embellish" it a wee bit when it's back together again......

Just a small bit of work to-day}--- When built, the water tank securing bolts had been put in first and tightened, then the tank tops fitted..........which means each time I want to remove the Tank/Cab assy.I have to take the tank tops off to access the bolt heads......As the bolt holes are now clearance size I'll have to soft-solder them into position.............Careful use of sandpaper and a flat-bladed screwdriver saw the inside faces cleaned and a paste flux applied..... ... An old-fashioned home-made heavy duty copper-bit iron was used to tin the inside faces----- ---------- The head undersides on 4 off---2BA bolts were tinned, then placed vertically down into the holes.........The flame from a small gas torch was played over each assy. from below until both solders melted and the bolt secured.. ....The joints were then cleaned with water and dried.........

The excess solder was filed clear and the assy. tried onto the chassis >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> ------------------------- as you can see the L/H steps have been removed for repair and upgrading ( the fitting of a brace between the rear of the steps and the frame member........Note also where the soleplate has been damaged when the step was knocked............This mod. will be done on both sides....YES, that's a spare Simplex boiler on the left.........Has anyone the inner and outer backhead plates ( Or known to some as DOORPLATES )that I could buy to finish this one off ??-----------OR swap for "something of use" ??

many of us im sure are watching closely the completion of WHR/WHHR RUSSELL (due in a week!) the above pic i think is interesting as shows what looks like being now the final finish on the smokebox with a very matt almost grey finish compared with gloss black frames. if the smokebox and chimney doesnt get a lick of gloss black i wonder what you think? cheers, julian
