I know where it belongs... I was hoping for "translation" (I am looking at some old ME drawings).

What does "bare" mean when applied to dimension, please? I guess it is peculiar model engineering lingo? (never recall seeing it on another drawing? but I could be wrong...) I suppose it means +0

Indian chucks in the size we are talking about are made form ductile iron not steel afaik. 4306-160 from Bison (steel) sells new for about £450 (vat included) - that's 3 to 4 times as much the one from Zither India... So I guess I will continue searching for "good as brand new" :-) although I guess Pratt is also made form iron? not steel?

I don't think Arc Euro ever did anything from Poland (Bison) or Eastern Europe (TOS) - if it was was it would be 3 to 4 times as much as what they are offering :-) I have Chinese 4 jaw from one of UK model engineering suppliers and it is nowhere near as good as my other chucks.

Yes, that's why I am after "slim body". 6" is quoted at around 4.5kg (which is about the same weight typically, as 5" independent 4 jaw).
The one I am talking about is exact copy of the original/old Myford 4 jaw, but made in India by Zither.
So, the one you bought - was it Chinese or Indian?

I am after one of these (specifically Pratt Burnerd with backplate fitting, not integral Myford thread) and while I am looking at epay I am also tempted by the Indian knock off offered by Arc Euro (Zither brand). Has anybody got any experience of these Indian chucks? or should I wait patiently for the original?

Thanks for that striplar, that's exactly my difficulty. Yes, I've found torx screws on ebay - all of them from China and selling in packets of 10 :-)
The link BTW is the same one I mention in my original post - very useful indeed!

Thanks for that, I will double check, but their web page (like everybody else I've seen so far) only has DCMT in the two typical sizes 07 and 11. I heard that Sandvik were doing 09 in the past but it doesn't appear on their standard offering either.

Sounds like this is what I will have to do ... It would appear all the industrial ones are either 07 or 11 (or upwards). I was hoping that 09 might be some kind of "model engineering" size?
At least I know more now about ISO codes for inserts that I did when I started :-)

Managed to find this page to help me work out what is the size of my inserts: insert designationMaybe the link will help someone in similar position? My inserts were D shape and that wasn't a problem, the size was what I have messed up... It is now clear to me that I should have searched of 09 size inserts (too large were size 11 and too small were size 07). But looking at most of the stuff available on the interweb 09 seems to be an odd, or at least not a "preferred" size?

I have inherited couple of these toolholders SDJC L/R 1010-03S and loved using them until I had to replace inserts I tried to be clever and did a bit of googling and bravely bought some inserts on ebay - ended up with too big inserts. Tried again and yet again they were the right type but wrong size (this time too small). Not a total loss, since I can always make my own toolholders, but it would be nice to get the right inserts for the toolholders that I have, hence my question - can any of you kind gentlemen point to idiot-proof way of getting the right inserts? Similarly what's the best place to get torx insert screws? Thanks Chris

...I had not heard of the Zara truck before... Because everywhere else it's know as Bissel bogie/truck from Levi Bissell who is generally credited with inventing it. Chris ps and no, there is no mistake Bissel (single L) bogie and Bissell (double L) Levi .

Hi jo and welcome to fellow Prazimat owner It is indeed #3 (as is apparently Maximat) BTW I know I can (and have) made backplates, but what disappoints me is the price of DIN 55021 chucks - mounting directly without backplate shortens overhang, so would be desirable but not at the price being asked for ... Other thing to bear in mind - spindle nose DIN 55021. Very good if you live on the continent and can afford chucks to suit, otherwise you will be making your own backplates ... You can get both backplates and chucks here in UK but the prices are ... Chris

Yeah, that's not a bad place and I am sure many G1 guys cross over, while following NG aspect of the hobby. I am also sure that they would not mind occasional OT (as far as being not 16mm) question, but ... it is not the natural place for G1 guys to congregate. I would still prefer that G1MRA be open (at least for reading if not to post) for outsiders, but like I've said it's not my business. Both ME Clearing House G1 and Union Steam seem to be the best alternatives for "free range" guy. Chris

Can't comment on G1MRA forum, because I am not a member and their forum is "closed shop". Which BTW I think is an error, but it's not my business. There is also uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/FS32SGrailways/ which is interesting if you are into fine scale, but will not help you much with building of steam loco. There is also fine place run by Union Steam www.unionsteam.co.uk/forum/ - that would be useful. The reason for my question was curiosity, because as you say, there don't seem to be natural place to gather for the lone wolf operator (not a member of G1MRA) interested in smaller scale steam locos. Nice to be able to help. How come you are asking here instead of the usual G1 hanging out places?

It is normal practice (both in full size and smaller gauge) to fix the boiler rigidly at smokebox end and have sliding arrangement at the firebox end to allow for thermal expansion. In the case of "Project" the bit of the text that is eluding you is this: Chris
